A cutting board is a basic and essential tool in every kitchen. It looks pretty at first, but after some time of use it becomes a habitat for bacteria if not cared for properly. And it happens that some boards become so neglected that much more bacteria can be found on them than on the toilet seat.
Why is the cutting board becoming a breeding ground for bacteria?
First, raw meat is a real paradise for bacteria. We think that by clearing the board after meat, we can safely use it for cutting vegetables, fruits, or crunchy bread. But this is not the case, they are still on the shelf. Only very high temperatures kill most microorganisms.
Therefore, in order to maintain hygiene in the kitchen, it is worth having several cutting boards, and one of them should only be used for meat. Thanks to this, we will reduce the risk of serious poisoning and illness. This piece of meat must be washed especially thoroughly.
What material is the best board?
There are many chopping boards, they differ from each other in the type of materials and colors. Experts have subjected them to bacterial tests. As a result, they noticed that bacteria multiply faster on cutting boards made of marble, glass and plastic than on wooden ones. The smoother the surface of the cutting board, the better it is for germs.
How to properly care for a cutting board
It is understood that the cutting board should be washed thoroughly after each use. But is that enough? Probably not, it is better from time to time to arrange for your boards a “general head wash”, especially wooden ones.
1. Salt. Salt works well for cleaning the cutting board. It is enough to sprinkle the surface of the board with salt once every few days and leave it overnight. The next morning you need to rinse it under running water and the board will be ready to use.
2. Salt with vinegar. This mixture is created in the blink of an eye. Simply pour hot water into the vinegar, add a pinch of salt and stir. This creates a homemade liquid for wiping cutting boards and other kitchen utensils.
3. Oil and salt… The combination of vegetable oil and salt provides an effective cleaning liquid for cutting boards. Everyone has these foods in the kitchen, so you should use them for more than just cooking. It is enough to rub this mixture into scratches or cracks on the cutting board – and you can assume that you have done the necessary disinfection.
4. Lemon. Lemon juice is great for cleaning too. Rubbing lemon on a cutting board is a good way to protect it from bacterial invasion.
5. Lemon and salt. Lemon goes well with salt. Cut the lemon in half, sprinkle coarsely with salt and then wipe the cutting board. After such a procedure, it can be used again without fear of lurking bacteria.
