Curtains are one of the most important elements in the interior design of any room. In addition to the fact that they carry a functional load – they cover from the sun and from prying eyes – they are, to a large extent, responsible for the overall impression. Even the most sophisticated interior can be ruined by poorly chosen curtains. Therefore, we choose curtains for the living room based on several criteria. Firstly, style, secondly, colors.
General rules
First of all, you need to decide on the color scheme and type of fabric. For curtains, you must select the following options:
- determine the density of the fabric: take a very dense heavy fabric, or a lighter, flowing one;
- type of coloring – one-colored or with a pattern;
- the texture of the canvas – the surface is matte or shiny, or maybe alternating stripes of both textures.
According to a similar scheme, curtains are also selected. One point: if you want lace curtains – a novelty of this season – plain-colored curtains or with elements of the same pattern, but present in the form of a border or border, would be more appropriate.
The color of the curtains for the living room are selected based on the general nature of the design. If the overall design of the living room turned out to be very calm, you can focus on the window: make curtains or curtains brighter, and add a couple of little things of the same color to the interior. This will help to revive the overall picture and give a different sound.
If you need to highlight, say, a recreation area, then decorate the window in the same colors as the walls, maybe playing a little with shades: darker-lighter, depending on the situation.
Curtains in the living room of different styles
There are many types of curtains – classic – with and without lambrequins, Austrian, French, Japanese, Roman, rolled. At the same time, classic ones can be hung on hooks, eyelets (rings in the fabric), loops. All of them have their own differences and the appearance of the window changes significantly, which is why only some of the listed ones are suitable for each of the design styles.
Modern style – modern
The current rhythm of life dictates to us the styles of design – the fewer details, the better: finding time for cleaning is not easy, and the classic looks somehow too pastoral. In any case, in city apartments they are trying to get away from a large number of frills and draperies: dust will be collected less.
In the living rooms of a modern interior, classic curtains look good – curtains and drapes. Only definitely without lambequins, garters and other ways of drapery. The lines are straight and clear, the fabrics are completely without shine or with a slightly noticeable reflection, similar to the radiance of silk.
You can fit into such an environment and the novelty of the last year – filament curtains. They can go as a “second layer” on the main fabric.
Japanese curtains look good. These are absolutely flat canvases of small width. They are ideal for small spaces. They can be, as in the first photo, two-color or have more shades or a pattern – floral or graphic – you select according to the situation.
If desired, you can hang rolled or Roman models on the window – there are many discrepancies in style. If you like this combination – please. Looks really modern.
Minimalism and high-tech
Styles have significant differences, but the same models are used in the design of windows: straight, even. Fabrics – plain, without patterns or with clear graphics, it is possible to use photo printing.
This is primarily used by classic curtains on the grommets. They are made from a fabric with a more or less pronounced sheen, which emphasizes the geometry of the folds: they are all even and the same with such a suspension.
As a rule, a bright shine is inherent in high-tech, a more subdued one is more common in minimalism, but there is no hard and fast rule.
Interesting combinations of two types of curtains. For example, Japanese and classic, and in both variations. In the first photo – the design of the panoramic window in the living room. Curtains – Japanese type, from a light transparent white veil, curtains of a classic design from dense brown fabric.
The reverse combination looks more rigorous – ordinary organza curtains with a small number of folds and absolutely even Japanese curtains of pale green color. The same shade is in textiles, a little lighter – on the ceiling.
Roller blinds and Roman blinds are combined with minimalism and hi-tech. Fabrics – monophonic, it is possible with a metallic sheen.
Curtains for the living room in a classic style
Already from the name of the style it is clear that classic models will definitely fit. And here are some – you choose. After all, the classics can also be different – in the Empire or Rococo style – lush expensive fabrics with bright sheen and plentiful draperies, both on the sides and in the upper part, will go.
English classic – requires a completely different window design. The same models can be used, but matte fabrics, lying in heavy folds – on the grommets are more suitable.
For a living room in a classic style, French curtains are also suitable. They may be too ceremonial and not quite practical, but they look chic and give some kind of romance.
The model in the photo is made of organza with a golden sheen. She repeats almost exactly the gilding on the furniture. Such a model requires large windows and a decent area, with high ceilings: abundant draperies look just like that.
Another option for this style is Austrian. This is also drapery, and similar to French, but not on the entire surface, but only in part – at the top or bottom
They look great in a bay window, they will look good on a panoramic window. Drapery can be done at the top, as well as not only on curtains, but also on curtains.
