Currant Vologda: variety description
Currant “Vologda” is considered one of the best varieties of black currant. It has a lot of advantages, including good winter hardiness, disease resistance and a pleasant dessert taste.
Description of the currant variety “Vologda”
It’s easy to find out this currant. Unlike other varieties, it has a thicker bush, strewn with clusters of large berries. A photo of the Vologda currant is presented below.
Vologda currant ripens by the beginning of August
The main characteristics of the variety:
- Sprawling bush, reaching 1,3 m in height. The branches are powerful, straight.
- The crown is abundantly covered with large leaves of rich green color.
- Brushes with berries reach 10 cm in length, forming an arched shape. On one bunch, there are up to 14 large fruits, each weighing up to 3 g.
- The fruits have a deep black color, regular round shape. The skin is firm, but may burst when overripe.
- The taste of berries is sweet with a slight sourness and rich aroma.
The fruits of this variety contain a large amount of vitamin C, up to 140 mg per 100 g of berries. Even after full maturation, they hang tightly on the hands and do not crumble.
The variety is self-fertile, fully ripening in early August. The yield is high, up to 4 kg per bush.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
In addition to the above, the advantages of the variety include:
- Strong immunity, the ability to take root in any region with any climatic conditions.
- Good winter hardiness. It tolerates well even severe frosts.
- Unpretentiousness to the quality of the soil. The exception is swampy and stony soil, on which currants will grow poorly.
- Resistant to many major diseases and pests.
- Good transportability. Intact fruits, when picked together with a brush, are able to remain fresh for a long time.
- Versatility of application. Vologda berries are good for consumption both fresh and after processing. They can be boiled, frozen or canned without losing their beneficial properties.
The disadvantages of the Vologda currant include its non-simultaneous ripening, as a result of which the upper berries may crack on the brush when they are overripe. A wide spreading crown can take up too much space in a small garden.
Vologda will be a good choice even for a novice gardener. Caring for her is simple and does not require special knowledge. A rich harvest will provide vitamins for the whole winter.
