Currant Dobrynya

Blackcurrant is grown in almost all summer cottages and household plots. Indeed, in burgundy-black berries there is a real pantry of vitamins. Fruits have not only a culinary purpose, but are also an indispensable tool for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.

Blackcurrant Dobrynya is a relatively young variety from breeders. But today you can already see positive feedback from gardeners and farmers growing this berry shrub. The characteristics of the variety are such that it is considered the best achievement of breeders.

Currant Dobrynya

History of the variety

The author of the new currant variety is A. I. Astakhov, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, VNII Lyupina. Thanks to interspecific crossing of its own variety Izyumnaya and variety-linear hybrid 42-7, blackcurrant Dobrynya was obtained. From the Izyumnaya variety, the new hybrid plant has adopted the sweetness of the fruit.

Currant Dobrynya has been in the State Register since 2004. The plant was recommended for growing in the middle lane and in the south of Our Country. But gradually the number of regions expanded. Today, bushes of this variety, according to gardeners, have taken their rightful place in areas in almost all regions of our country.

Variety description

Despite the fact that the Dobrynya blackcurrant is a relatively young berry plant, it confidently “walks” across the expanses.

Bush features

According to the description of the originators, as well as the reviews of gardeners, Dobrynya blackcurrant is a compact plant with erect shoots. That is why it forms a neat and compact crown. The height of the currant is within 170 cm. This parameter directly depends on the region where the bushes are grown.

The hybrid differs from other plants of the culture in the unusual color of young shoots. The bark on them is with an olive-violet tint and a slight sheen. Shoots are not too thick with slight pubescence.

Currant Dobrynya

Dark green leaves with five lobes, with a noticeable wrinkle. Leaf blades are different in size, aligned. Each leaf has small incisions in the form of teeth.

Fruit

Currant variety Dobrynya blooms with large, pale yellow flowers. In a thick green brush with small twists, up to 10 berries are tied. The cluster is not dense, but rather loose. Brushes are formed mainly in the middle and upper part of the branch, and not at the base.

Currant Dobrynya

The fruits of the blackcurrant hybrid of the Dobrynya variety are large, the weight varies between 4,5-7 grams. Oval berries with dense and elastic skin. That is why fruit cracking is not typical for the plant.

Important! The place of separation of the berry from the stalk remains dry.

Currants are fragrant, rather sweet, since there is little acid in them. Taste properties are highly appreciated by tasters, they received 4,8 points.

Advantages of a hybrid

According to the description of the variety, the reviews of gardeners and the photos sent by them, we can conclude that there are clear advantages of the Dobrynya currant:

  1. The bushes are upright, compact, not sprawling, therefore, there is room for planting other crops.
  2. Large-fruited and early maturity is another important plus in the description and characteristics of the Dobrynya variety. The next year after planting, the plant begins to bear fruit.
  3. A stable harvest of sweet berries, regardless of weather conditions. Just look at the photo, what large berries.

  4. The versatility of using berries: jam, compotes, jams, marmalade. Frozen fruits of the Dobrynya variety retain all their vitamins and beneficial properties.
  5. Due to the high winter hardiness, currant bushes without shelter can be grown in regions where the thermometer does not fall below 25 degrees. In the rest of Our Country, plantings are sheltered for the winter.
  6. Spring frosts or drought in summer do not adversely affect Dobrynya blackcurrant. The plant does not shed either flowers or ovaries.
  7. The yield is average, from 1,6 to 2,4 per bush. But this does not stop farmers involved in culture, since hybrid berries are in high consumer demand.
  8. Currant bushes of the Dobrynya variety are practically not affected by powdery mildew.

How I would like to meet a garden culture, which one could admiringly talk about indefinitely. Unfortunately, Dobrynya has some drawbacks, as gardeners write about in reviews:

  • not too high yield for a modern variety;
  • transportability, according to gardeners, is low, as the berries cake and crumple;
  • serious problems with the survival of seedlings due to the slow formation of roots;
  • susceptibility of the blackcurrant variety Dobrynya to the bud mite.

Features of landing

As already noted, the Dobrynya currant has a problem with reproduction, seedlings do not always take root. Let’s take a step-by-step look at how to properly plant blackcurrants.

Steps:

  1. The hole is dug in advance. It should be 40 cm deep and 50-60 cm wide. The seats should be spaced about one and a half meters apart to ensure sufficient air circulation. Aisles are left within 2-2,5 meters. With this scheme, it is convenient to care for the bushes. In addition, plants get sick less often.
  2. Blackcurrant is demanding on the soil. It should have enough nutrients, so about 150 grams of wood ash is added to each pit, up to 5 kg of compost or humus.
  3. Before planting, be sure to inspect the root system of the bush. If there is damage, it is better to discard the seedling. Roots need to be distributed throughout the hole.
  4. It is better to plant currants together. In this case, it will be more convenient to hold the bush at an angle of 45 degrees. The assistant fills the seedling with soil. The root neck should not be deeper than 8 cm, and the fruit buds should be flush with the surface.
  5. The soil around the Dobrynya currant seedling is trampled to release air from under the roots.
  6. Under each bush pour 10-15 liters of water.
  7. Immediately planting mulch to retain moisture. You can use compost, dry grass, rotted sawdust.

Care of plantings

Further care for planting currant varieties Dobrynya is traditional: watering, top dressing, loosening, weed removal, pruning and preparation for winter.

Features of watering

It should be understood that the yield and taste of black currants depend on proper and regular watering.

Comment! If there is little water, the berries become hard, with excess moisture they can crack.

In addition, excess water leads to decay of the root system and death of the bush.

The bushes are watered in near-stem circles so that water does not flow out, they make circular grooves with high sides. Watering is performed once every 14-21 days. Up to 20 liters of water are poured under the root.

But at some stages of the growing season, currants need more moisture, up to 4 buckets under a bush:

  • in mid-May, when the Dobrynya blackcurrant berries begin to set;
  • in June, when the filling begins;
  • before winter, when there are no leaves left on the bushes of the variety, when performing water-charging irrigation.

Additional fertilizing

Blackcurrant Dobrynya, like other varieties or hybrids, needs nutrients. Those fertilizers that were added when planting seedlings are enough for only one season. A decrease in the nutritional value of the soil negatively affects the yield and the formation of the bush itself.

When and what to feed:

  1. In the spring, dry urea up to 50 grams is scattered into the trunk circle. Before this, abundant watering is necessary so that the fertilizer does not burn the roots.
  2. When the currant begins to release tassels, the bushes are watered with infusion of mullein, bird droppings.
  3. During the flowering period, you need to feed the Dobrynya variety twice with organic matter: mullein, chicken droppings or an infusion of green grass, nettle.
  4. When flowers appear on the bushes of the variety, foliar top dressing is carried out to stimulate the ovaries. For its preparation, take 10 grams of copper sulfate, 2 grams of boric acid, 5 grams of potassium permanganate per 10 liters of water. 2-3 liters are spent on one bush. After feeding, the berries will be larger and sweeter.
  5. When green berries form on the tassels, Dobrynya blackcurrant bushes are abundantly watered with clean water along a groove located in a circle, and fertilized with chicken droppings.
  6. Before wintering, chicken manure or compost is laid under the bushes (2-3 kg per plant), but they are not buried in the soil. Over the winter, this dressing will decompose and prepare the currants for the new growing season.

Some gardeners write in reviews that they feed blackcurrant bushes with unconventional methods:

  1. For irrigation all summer long, bread kvass is used, 2-4 liters per plant, or soaked and fermented bread is buried.
  2. Potato husks are laid along the perimeter of the Dobrynya variety bush.
  3. Planted legumes are excellent green manure, which are buried in the ground in autumn. These plants nourish the root system with nitrogen, activate the beneficial microflora of the soil.

Trimming rules

In order for the blackcurrant crop to be stable from year to year, the bushes need to be rejuvenated. Shoots bear fruit for no more than 5 years, then the yield decreases sharply. That is why an audit is carried out every year and old branches are cut to the root.

Each bush should have shoots of different ages. Young shoots are shortened by 15 centimeters so that side branches appear on them.

The root shoots of the Dobrynya blackcurrant, if it grows strongly, are cut out all summer, leaving only powerful replacement shoots. In the spring, pruning is done before the sap begins to move, as soon as the soil thaws.

Reviews

Victor, 48 years old, Brest
Currant variety Dobrynya planted three years ago. The next summer we tried the berries. Very large and sweet. I also have other berry bushes of culture, so I treated everything from diseases and pests for prevention. In the spring, at the beginning of March, I boil water, add potassium permanganate. While pouring into the watering can, the water cools down a bit. Water the bushes from above. My currant is not sick.
Nina, 34, Trans-Baikal Territory
I read about large-fruited currants and ordered Dobrynia seedlings last spring by mail. Of the 5 pieces, only 2 took root. In the summer, the currant gave new growth. Sheltered for the winter, we’ll see how they go.
