“Curly method” of hair care: step-by-step instructions with video
We are talking about the Curly Girl Method – a way to create natural curls, which everyone is crazy about.
“I didn’t know I had curly hair!” – this is how the story of those who have tried the “curly” method of hair care usually begins. If you also often hear rave reviews about this method and want to test its effectiveness on yourself, then this material will be very useful to you. Especially if you have naturally porous, fluffy hair.
Curly girl method is a complex for the care of frizzy curly hair, which includes a certain sequence of applying various products and using special techniques (for example, squash). This method was developed back in the 90s by Lorraine Messi, the author of the book Curly Hair. Hairstyle, Haircut, Grooming ”, founder of curly hair salons Devachan and curly hair care brands DevaCurl and CurlyWorld. Over the years, the “curly” method has undergone a number of changes. We decided to understand its basic principles and make step-by-step instructions.
Принципы Curly girl method
Initially, it was supposed to abandon shampoos in any form (instead of them, conditioner should be used – the covashing method). However, in the modern version, cleansing is recommended to be selected depending on the type of scalp: covashing – for dry, sulfate-free shampoo – for normal, sulfate shampoo – for oily. Some people prefer to alternate between means.
Refusal of silicones in formulations of products that straighten and make curls heavier.
A hairdryer, curling iron, combs and terry towels will also have to be put aside on the far shelf, since all these products interfere with the natural formation of curls.
Step-by-step instructions for the “curly” method
1. Shampooing
Before switching to the Curly girl method, it is necessary to thoroughly rinse the silicones from the hair. This can only be done with sulfate shampoo. Then choose a product based on your scalp type.
Important:
while washing, lower your head down;
the water must be cold;
Apply conditioner or shampoo liberally only to the scalp (not the entire length), massaging for a few minutes;
wash off the product;
squeeze excess water from the bottom up, collecting the strands into a fist and lightly pressing them to the head.
If, after washing with the described means, itching and dandruff appear, then it is better to return to sulfate shampoo. To prevent this from happening, rinse your scalp thoroughly.
2. Moisturizing / nourishing hair
Apply conditioner or mask to the entire length of your hair. Leave it on for 5 minutes, during which it is necessary to comb through the hair with your fingers (there will be no more opportunity to comb the hair). Then rinse off the product, but not very thoroughly. It is desirable that a small part of it remains on the hair.
3. Squish-to-condish
Or squash. The stage at which you need to squeeze the strands and the conditioner / mask remaining on them in the palms. If you’ve washed off most of the product, put it in your hand, dilute it with water, and go back to squeezing the strands. This is how future curls are formed.
4. Indelible agent
Squeeze the strands lightly and apply a generous amount of leave-in care (balm, gel, serum). The movements are the same – squeezing, from the bottom up.
5. Styling agent
On wet strands, apply a styling agent – foam, mousse or gel. After drying, it forms a dense shell, which will give a clear curl shape.
6. Plopping
Instead of a terrycloth towel, which will only fluff your hair, you need a microfiber option or any smooth item (such as an unnecessary T-shirt). Important: do not dry your hair, but wrap it up, making a so-called turban. 15-30 minutes will be enough for the excess liquid to be absorbed, and the curls are dry, but not out of shape.
7. Drying
Loosen the turban and let your hair dry naturally (you cannot use a comb). To add volume at the roots in the front and at the crown, the hair can be lifted slightly by securing it with a crab.
While the hair is drying, you should periodically lower your head down and squeeze the strands, moving your hand towards the roots. You can also twist individual curls with your finger using a little styling.
Silk bedding and oils such as lavender, rosewood, jasmine, coconut or castor will help preserve curls until the next wash. Apply them to the ends of the strands.
