Creative Cities in Gastronomy

The network of cities is grouped around different creative activities such as crafts, design, cinema, gastronomy, literature, music and audiovisual arts.

La United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, generally known by its acronym, UNESCO, is the promoter of the Creative Cities Network of the planet, which currently groups 69 members from 32 countries.

The main mission is to promote the sustainable cultural development of urban centers, on the premise of respect for human rights, in creative activity as a lever for development.

There are seven categories in which the creative groups on which the organization acts are divided with a clear support influence of cooperation, exchange of experiences and knowledge in the activities of Crafts, Design, Cinema, Literature, Music, Audiovisual Arts, Gastronomy.

Currently in our country the cities of Seville in the field of Music, Bilbao in design, Granada in Literature and Barcelona have this distinction, recently included on December 11 in this category.

The Spanish contribution to the Network of Creative Cities in Gastronomy

On December 11, at the annual meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network designating committee, the Spanish cities were awarded Burgos and Denia the distinction in the category of Gastronomy.

The Valencian city of Denia, enters the select club, after not having achieved it last year, but the result of the effort and intensity of work developed by the institutions of “the Marina Alta “, have managed to locate the gastronomic culture of the locality on the world map 

From this moment the gamba roja and arroz a banda, They become part of the culinary symbols that provide tradition, sustainability and above all flavor and tourism.

Regarding the city of Burgos, its inclusion in the network has been a recognition of the intense work carried out by the city council of the city over several years, with a project called “human engines”.

Its content is based on a laboratory where evolutionary science and cooking merge, with the participation of the National Center for Human Evolution, the University of Burgos, Burgos cooks and the College of Physicians.

Their insistent search for better health through food has given them the passport to the select club of creative cities, that since those distant years of prehistory, gastronomy was already beginning to be thought of not only as a physiological necessity, but also as a means of socialization and pleasure, as the researchers of the Atapuerca deposits, which already consolidates experimental energy studies, in terms of caloric consumption at rest and in activity, which the inhabitants of the area had thousands of years ago. 

Thus, these two cities have come to this day that demonstrate how Spanish culinary culture is important and above all outstanding in product aspects and especially nutrition.

All this paired with an excellent creative activity as a result of the exciting professional growth that gastronomic activity has developed by the hand of the best chefs on the planet, who are here in Spain.
