What does creatinine in urine show? Does creatinine in urine mean serious medical conditions? Should the doctor order additional tests? What is the further diagnosis? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.
What Can Creatinine in Urine Mean?
Hello, I am 33 years old and I have recently had preventive examinations, including morphology and urine tests. The urine test showed creatinine and I don’t know what that means. Whether the presence of creatinine in the urine can it be related to something dangerous to your health? Can my doctor order any other, more detailed tests, since my result showed that there is creatinine in my urine? If so, what exemplary tests should be performed – maybe you can sign up for them right away? Which it shows at all creatinine in the urine?
I’ve never seen anything like this before. My test results were always good and they were always normal. I’m a bit worried because my brother is currently in hospital – he has a kidney problem. This is one of the reasons why I did a urine test to see if I was okay. I don’t know, maybe I didn’t pay attention to this creatinine before, but now I’m getting nervous. Please explain what does creatinine in urine show? Regards.
The doctor explains, as evidenced by the level of creatinine
Creatinine is a byproduct of metabolism in the muscles. Healthy kidneys should excrete waste products in the urine along with creatinine, therefore its presence in the urine is perfectly normal and the kidneys function efficiently.
Urine creatinine results they depend on the patient’s age, gender, medical history, muscle mass, and the range of physiological results depends on the standards adopted by the laboratory.
Usually proper secretion of creatinine with blood is 0.6-1.8 g / day, depending on the factors mentioned above. It is a test that is carried out on the basis of a daily urine collection, not a one-time test. This means that for a period of 24 hours we collect urine in one container and send such material to the laboratory.
Less than normal daily urinary excretion of creatinine may indicate progressive chronic kidney disease or acute kidney failure, e.g. as a result of the use of nephrotoxic drugs or conditions causing a reduction in the volume of blood circulating in the body and a secondary reduction in blood flowing through the kidneys (blood loss, heart failure, obstruction of the urinary tract due to, for example, urolithiasis) .
Increased urinary creatinine excretion may be evidence of renal hyperfiltration of blood, which is seen in pregnancy, diabetes (before diabetic nephropathy develops), or with a large daily supply of protein. Also physiologically, if our muscle mass is greater as well excretion of creatinine in the urine is bigger. Creatinine is produced in skeletal muscles as the end product of the metabolic reaction, and the more muscle mass we have, the more creatinine is created.
Also, if you eat a diet rich in protein and meat, large amounts of creatinine are formed during digestion, which may increase the excretion of creatinine in the urine compared to those on a balanced diet.
