This room is needed by the child at the same time for relaxation, games and study – that is why its design often turns into a real puzzle. But this challenge is accepted by feng shui – the Chinese art of arranging space and managing its energy.
Having mastered offices, living rooms and bedrooms, feng shui is heading to children’s rooms. What does he promise? Establish balance and fill the space with harmony. How? Thanks to the arrangement of furniture, the correct selection of colors, materials, shapes and lighting. Feng Shui also attaches importance to the location of the room relative to the cardinal points, but in this we are often hostages of circumstances: we bought an apartment, all the windows of which face one side, or a nursery needs to be entered into an already equipped house. “This is not critical,” says Olga Sokolova, a feng shui specialist, “the main thing is that the decoration of the children’s room and the atmosphere in it correspond to the yang – the natural energy of the child, do not suppress it and at the same time do not allow it to overflow the banks.” It is good to choose the correct location of the room relative to the cardinal points during the construction of your own house: it is better if the windows of the children’s room face east, southeast or south.
Develop his creativity
“Feng Shui takes into account the three main dimensions of a child’s life: creativity, study and sleep,” says Olga Sokolova. Children naturally carry a sense of harmony and the joy of creativity – a source of great energy. To manage it, allocate a place in the nursery where the child can leave a slight creative mess, which, of course, should be distinguished from a big mess. “Chaos depresses feelings, which is why you need to think about where to put away toys, books, games,” explains Olga Sokolova. “It is advisable not to push anything under the bed – only boxes with clean linen can be placed there.”
All game material that stimulates the imagination – designers, cubes, pencils, paper – should be accessible, that is, located below. If you take them too high, it will slow down the spontaneity and naturalness of the child: he will want to get something he needs and will not be able to. “It is important to give children the opportunity to reorganize their space and make micro-changes,” advises Olga Sokolova. An easy-to-move toy box on wheels, or multiple stackable boxes, will keep your child active. “If he does not have a desire to host in his room, then his vital energy is suppressed,” concludes Olga Sokolova. “And one of the reasons for this may be the improperly organized space of the room.”
Help him focus
Often the nursery serves as a child and his office. Can you make him sit when everything about him needs to move? “It is better not to place a desk in a straight line between the door and the window, where the energy flows are too fast,” advises Olga Sokolova. “Try to sit the child with his back to the wall – this will provide him with the best support, or turn him with his back to the window and “protect” the high back of the chair. It is also important to determine where the child’s eyes will fall when he sits at the table to study. This may seem insignificant, however, make sure that the window or door only falls into the side view zone, otherwise the child will be distracted by what is happening in the hallway or on the street. “In the “creativity” zone, where the desk is located, hang children’s drawings in red frames on the wall – this will inspire the child,” says Olga Sokolova. “And for crafts, it’s better to select a separate shelf with good lighting.”
In the area where the child’s eye falls, put one or two small houseplants with large, wide leaves growing upwards. Plants in this case symbolize the craving for knowledge and at the same time do not allow to overstrain. And behind the back in a bookcase, along with encyclopedias and textbooks on an open shelf, you can place crystals or druse of smoky or rose quartz – so that the rays of the sun fall on them. Crystal stones cleanse and protect human energy well.
Canons of harmony
According to ancient Chinese tradition, the invisible and subtle vital energy qi is inherent in any thing, any space. The task of Feng Shui is to organize the energy in the room so that the person who is there is comfortable. According to the Chinese, a calm and benevolent disposition contributes to well-being. The art of feng shui is based on the theory of wu xing – the interaction of five elements – Wood, Earth, Fire, Metal and Water, with which certain shapes, colors and textures are associated. The energy of the child – yang – is inherent in two elements – Wood and Fire, therefore they are preferred in the nursery. Earth will be needed to give stability and maintain balance, and Metal and Water – to direct the stormy flows of the child’s creative energy.
Take care of his sleep
For the nights to be serene, the child must feel safe. “When choosing a place for a bed, remember that since ancient times it was important for a person not to be taken by surprise,” says Olga Sokolova. “Protect your head with a wall or headboard and make sure that the entire room, and especially the door, falls into the child’s field of vision.” A feeling of insecurity can also arise if the bed is placed under the window. Exit? Drape the window with thick curtains made of natural materials such as linen so that the energy does not “leave” through it.
Feng Shui does not neglect any detail: it is important to pay attention to the paintings located next to the bed – they should be calm and positive. If the child loves dinosaurs and other monsters, hang them on another part of the wall. “Since the bed occupies the “family” sector, and the family symbolizes protection and support for children, place a photo of the child with his parents, brothers, grandparents above the bed,” advises Olga Sokolova. “If he wants to choose one of his relatives, this will mean that it is from him that he receives the most significant energy supply.”
And one more thing: in order for the children to sleep better, make sure that the bed linen is in soothing colors, and the pattern on it is smooth and rounded.
room to live
1. Lighting
As the main light, choose a ceiling chandelier that will direct light to the ceiling, and then bounce off it. Put a lamp on the table, hang a night light in the form of a semicircle or crescent near the bed.Undesirable: spot lighting with a chandelier that directs the light down.
2. Photo
Photos of children with their parents stimulate the vital activity of the child.Undesirable: An excess of baby photos – they can slow down the development of the child.
3. On the walls
If the child insists, hang up small posters or posters.Undesirable: mirrors that accelerate energy (especially if they hang opposite the bed), as well as images of cats. It is good to give part of the wall for drawing, stretching paper there or attaching a slate board.
4. Colors
Bet on whitened, fresh, pastel colors: turquoise, peach, shades of yellow, orange. Create a clear, sunny “weather” in the room.Undesirable: saturated, bright and contrasting shades in large quantities, as well as dirty shades like swamp, dark brown or purple ink. White, shades of metal (silver, gold) use dosed.
5. Desk
Place it in such a way that the child sits with his back to the wall. If this is not possible, choose a chair with a high back.Undesirable: to place the desk in a straight line between the window and the door, where the flow of energy flows too quickly.
6. Cabinets and shelves
All important things for the child (toys, games, books) should be located at an accessible height.Undesirable: too high cabinets that cause discomfort for very young children playing on the floor (if you can’t do without them, use wardrobes that imitate the continuation of the wall), as well as corners that are directed towards the bed. Round off the corners of open shelves.
7. Screens
Only pocket electronic games are allowed. Undesirable: TVs, computers. They “hypnotize” the child and make him passive.
8. Under the bed
Put clean linen in drawers. If you plan to store toys there, make sure that they are kept in perfect order, and that the child often uses them.Undesirable: boxes filled with too heavy or broken objects – energy stagnates there.
9. Bed
Put her head against the wall – this will provide the child with a peaceful sleep. Undesirable: rubbish should not accumulate under the bed – it will cause oppressive energy, children will not get enough sleep, they can get tired quickly. If the child sleeps on a loft bed, there should be perfect order below.
