The true needs of oily skin are rarely guessed even by its owners. Therefore, they often choose the wrong care and cannot get rid of the problems characteristic of this type of skin. We explain what creams oily skin really needs and help you choose the best one, according to the editors of Healthy-Food.
Signs of oily skin
Choosing a cream for oily skin is not easy – every second owner of this skin type is ready to confirm this, who has tried several options before finding “his own”. But first, it would be a good idea to find out if your skin is oily. To do this, we propose to answer the questions below.
Does your skin actively secrete sebum and start to shine treacherously just a few hours after leaving the house?
Makeup (in particular, foundation) “floats away” before the end of the working day?
Rashes – frequent guests?
Even if the skin feels a lack of moisture, the oily sheen does not disappear?
Enlarged pores, especially in the T-zone and cheek area?
Is the skin tight?
How to choose a cream for oily skin
Signs of oily skin are excess shine, large pores, and often dehydration.
Before proceeding to the choice of cream in practice, that is, in a cosmetic store, we will study the theory. Let’s figure out what kind of care oily skin needs.
Rule one: ease
Unlike dry skin types, oily skin has a good lipid barrier, which means that rich, nourishing formulas, with rare exceptions, are not for her. Therefore, we choose light gel or fluid textures.
Rule two: hydrate
Regular and high-quality moisturizing will help bring oily skin closer to normal.
Rule Three: Matting
It is impossible to strongly influence the size of the pores (here the determining factor is genetics), but the cleaner they are, the smaller their diameter. Mattifying creams and lotions help control pore size.
Rule four: protection
If you are going for a long walk in sunny weather, as well as to the beach or mountains, do not forget the SPF cream. The protective reaction of the skin to UV radiation is a thickening of the stratum corneum. This is fraught with a violation of sebum secretion, which can lead to the appearance of non-inflammatory and inflammatory elements.
Types of creams for oily skin
There are not so many varieties of good creams for oily and problem skin. Moisturizers are shown to her during the day and in the evening. Before makeup, it is recommended to apply a matting cream.
Creams for oily skin
Type of cream | Materials | When to apply |
moisturizing | Saturates the skin with moisture thanks to hygroscopic components: hyaluronic acid, glycerin. Softens the skin, allows it to maintain freshness and youth. | day and/or night |
matting | Absorbs excess sebum thanks to the content of special particles (for example, mineral powder) in the formula and regulates its secretion. | afternoon; can be used as a base for make-up |
protective | Protects from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays due to the SPF filters in the composition, from free radicals and other negative environmental factors due to the content of antioxidants. | before going outside in summer or in conditions of increased solar activity (in the mountains, on the beach); residents of megacities – during the day, regardless of the season |
Oily skin needs good hydration.
Composition of cream for oily skin
Given the need for oily skin to control sebum production and good hydration, active ingredients are most often included in the cream.
Hygroscopic agents (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, propylene glycol, panthenol) absorb moisture and create a water-retaining barrier on the surface of the epidermis. And it, in turn, makes the skin smooth and tender.
Antioxidants (vitamins C and E, resveratrol, polyphenols) slow down the oxidation process, protecting cells from the effects of free radicals. As a result, they help prevent premature aging.
Salicylic acid destroys the bonds between dead skin cells, contributing to their exfoliation, accelerating regeneration, fighting inflammation, and therefore, evening out the relief and tone of the face.
Sorbents (starch, talc, powder, zinc, different types of clay) absorb the secret of the sebaceous glands, keeping the skin matte for a long time.
Эмульгаторы (Glyceryl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Glycol Stearate) combine the ingredients into a single formula.
Stabilizers (Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Carbomer) help to maintain the formula of the remedy.
Emollient ingredients improve cosmetic properties. Can act as a softener silicones (Dimethicone, Amodimethicone) и esters (Isopropyl Palmitate).
Application rules
Mattifying cream can be used as a make-up base.
In the case of oily skin, it is especially important to follow the cleansing-toning-moisturizing algorithm. But the main rule: do not try to get rid of sebum at all costs. Because cleansing “to the squeak” serves as a signal to the skin to increase sebum secretion.
For cleansing products that do not cause dehydration will come in handy.
Required condition – application of tonic. It restores the pH of the skin and prepares the skin to receive the active ingredients of the cream.
In the afternoon it is advisable to use a moisturizer with matte effect.
At night – moisturizing, with sebum-regulating effect.
