COVID-19 symptoms with the Delta variant
The fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland has been going on for several weeks, the number of infections is growing, it has already approached 800 new cases a day. The Delta variant dominates in our country (according to the GISAID database, it is responsible for 99,4% of cases). The symptoms of infection with this strain are slightly different from, for example, the symptoms of infection with the Alpha variant, but nevertheless many symptoms remain unchanged.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 infection today are primarily headache, sore throat, runny nose, elevated temperature and persistent cough. Loss of smell or taste occurs less frequently than with the previous variant, while hearing loss and sneezing occur more frequently. Muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea may also appear as the disease progresses.

The fourth wave of coronavirus coincided with the beginning of the cold and flu season. These symptoms of COVID-19 also accompany these infections. So how do you distinguish a cold from a coronavirus?
- How many vaccinated people got COVID-19? How many died?
– We are able to make an early diagnosis only on the basis of a coronavirus test. That is why it is so important not to give up on it, not to be afraid of it – said the contagious doctor Dr. Lidia Stopyra in an interview with Medonet.
– It is not an easy matter, in fact – Dr. Jacek Gleba, family doctor, pediatrician and internist tells Medonet. She recommends to pay attention to a runny nose. – If I were to point out differences, when there is a purulent runny nose and a wet cough, we are rather dealing with a cold. The symptoms of COVID-19 and the flu are very close to each other, the doctor notes.

The soil highlights a key symptom that will help with diagnosis. – Loss of smell and taste at the same time, or loss of one or the other, which occurred in the first waves in about 40 percent. cases are definitely a confirmation symptom of COVID-19.
A type of cough may be a clue. – If we have a non-productive cough, we can talk about many diseases. While coughing occurs with purulent discharge, this indicates more of a bacterial infection and less of a coronavirus. In the case of a viral infection, as in the case of flu or covid infection, it is difficult to distinguish one from the other, the accompanying loss of smell or taste can help – adds the pediatrician and internist.
The symptoms of sinusitis can also be confusing, according to the doctor. – Light symptoms, i.e. a feeling of heaviness in the head, the presence of watery mucus, it could be both flu and covid symptoms – says Gleba.
