WHO: Europe at the center of the COVID-19 resurgence

Europe welcomed summer, and with it, unfortunately, another installment of the coronavirus pandemic, which has already been going on for the third year. “We are seeing a much more intense (than before) COVID-19 outbreak sweeping through Europe again,” WHO Program Executive Michael Ryan recently admitted. The organization says bluntly: Europe is at the center of a recovery in the COVID-19 wave.

WHO estimates that the number of coronavirus infections in the world has increased by 30% in the last two weeks. With the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-options fueling growth in Europe and the United States.

Statistics show what is happening on the Old Continent. On July 6, in France, Germany and Italy, the daily number of infections exceeded 100. The day before, France had over 200 jobs. new cases. It is also not happy in other countries. According to ourworldindata.org data, the average weekly number of infections per million inhabitants has exceeded XNUMX in eight EU countries. In addition to the already mentioned France, Germany and Italy, these are: Luxembourg, Austria, Greece, Cyprus and Malta.

The current situation in Europe is presented in the chart below. Note that due to testing limitations, the number of confirmed cases is lower than it actually is.

Another wave of COVID-19. The ECDC map shows what is happening

From a longer perspective, see the map of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which is updated every week. The reference point here is the COVID-19 infection statistics in the European Union countries from the last 14 days.

The ECDC map is based on data that EU countries report to the European Surveillance System (TESSy).

What do the colors on the ECDC map mean?

Dark red color – over 300 cases per 100 thousand.

Red color – the number of new infections is between 100 and 300 per 100.

Orange color – the number of cases in the range of 40-100 per 100 thousand.

Countries marked in green: less than 40 cases per 100

Dark gray – the testing rate is lower (or equal to) than 600 cases per 100 thousand.

Stripes on a gray background – not enough information

The above map shows that the difficult situation also prevails, among others in Portugal, in the west of Slovenia and in Iceland.

It is encouraging that, thanks to the developed immunity, the new wave of infections has not resulted (so far) in a sharp increase in ICU admissions or a serious increase in deaths.
