One in eight infected may have long covid
It has been known for some time that some people who have had COVID-19 infection have long-term health problems due to long covid.
The article published by the scientific magazine “The Lancet” shows that the Dutch scientists were able to determine exactly how many patients are still suffering chronically after the disease. UMC employees conducted research among 13 thousand residents of the Netherlands, which shows that 12,7 percent. the patients continued to suffer from discomfort for three to five months after infection.
‘These mainly included chest pain, loss of smell and taste, fatigue and muscle aches,’ Professor Judith Rosmalen, who led the team that conducted the study, told NU. Their authors also mention, inter alia, general breathing problems, pain when doing this, feeling cold or hot, tingling (or heavy) in the legs and arms, a general feeling of tiredness.
The University Medical Center has been conducting research on the health situation of the population in North Holland since 2006 as part of the so-called Lifelines project. “That is why we were able to check very carefully whether people actually developed new ailments after being infected with the coronavirus,” says Professor Rosmalen.
Currently, researchers at a Dutch university are working to investigate the causes of these long-lasting symptoms.
