Doctors participating in the online event indicated that about 15% of patients with COVID-19 developed problems with the thyroid gland during the period of coronavirus infection, which manifested itself even several months after the disease.

In order to show the percentage of people who developed disorders in the work of thyroid hormones, several thousand cases of patients treated in hospitals in Italy in 2020 were analyzed.

In a study announcement, a team of scientists, including lecturers from the University of Milan, pointed out that the most common thyroid disease developing in people infected with the coronavirus was thyroiditis. However, it had slightly different symptoms than in cases unrelated to SARS-CoV-2. The patients did not feel, inter alia, neck pains.

The researchers explained that a group of nearly 100 survivors of COVID-19 was monitored to test the duration of thyroid problems in convalescents.

Ilaria Muller of the University of Milan, participant at the American Endocrine Society conference, indicated that most of the patients who developed thyroid problems with COVID-19 after leaving the hospital had these dysfunctions disappeared within three months after leaving the medical facility .
