The data analyzed by the American Red Cross shows that almost 21 percent. out of more than 3 million unvaccinated blood donors have IgG and IgM antibodies. This is important news for two reasons.
- The American Red Cross has been analyzing blood samples collected from donors since July 2020.
- The number of unvaccinated people with antibodies is growing systematically. In March 2021 it was the highest
- The data gives some information on the natural herd immunity that could end the coronavirus pandemic

COVID-19 antibodies in unvaccinated people – percentage data
The American Red Cross, since July 2020, has tested blood samples from honorary donors for IgG and IgM antibodies produced by the human body when exposed to SARS-CoV-2. It turned out that over the following months, these figures changed in people who did not receive the coronavirus vaccine.

Data received by CNN from the Red Cross shows that from July 2020 to March 2021, more than 3 million samples from blood donors who were not vaccinated were analyzed. It turned out that in the first week of July, COVID-19 antibodies were found in approx. 1,5 percent. samples. In the first week of October, this number rose to 4 percent. 12 percent samples taken in January 2021 contained antibodies. However, the highest percentage was found in the first week of March 2021 – then antibodies were detected in almost 21 percent. donors.
What do the antibodies detected in my blood samples mean?
The American Red Cross stressed that the data collected from unvaccinated blood donors did not mean that they accounted for more than 21 percent. people who are infected or have already developed immunity to the coronavirus. Antibodies can only indicate that the person has been in contact with COVID-19.
According to Dr. William Schaffner, longtime vaccine adviser to the US CDC, the data is impressive for two reasons.
First, a significant portion of the US population (or at least the blood donor population) has come into contact with COVID-19 – whether consciously or unconsciously. Second, a large part of the US population has not had contact with it – 80 percent. Which means we can’t just rely on a herd immunity strategy to emerge naturally. We have to get vaccinated so that over 80 percent. the population has acquired immunity, added Dr Schaffner.
Natural herd immunity – what is it?
Herd immunity, also known as herd immunity, is a condition in which non-immune individuals are protected by the fact that most of the population has already developed antibodies. In order for this to be possible, it is necessary to vaccinate as many people as possible.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Joe Biden’s health adviser at a press conference at the White House, emphasized that there is no point in focusing on the issue of natural herd immunity. Especially since it is still uncertain what percentage of the population would have to be immune to be considered as having reached this state.
– I have said many times that it is between 70 and 85%, but we do not know for sure. So, rather than fixate on it, we should rather say: vaccinate as many people as possible as soon as possible. Every day people are given over 2 million doses, so we are getting closer and closer to controlling this pandemic, concluded Dr Fauci.
