Covers for upholstered furniture: decorator tips

The items of upholstered furniture recognizable at first glance will cease to be so ordinary if you choose not quite familiar “clothes” for them. We update upholstered furniture with covers and our tips.

1. Decide on the main colors

Covers for upholstered furniture

Fabrics for upholstery or sewing covers should be selected in accordance with a well-thought-out color composition.

First, decide on a starting point – a foundation. In our example, we took a neutral white color for it. Then we started looking for companion flowers. They have become almost all shades of freshly blossomed plants.

By the way, since almost any bright color benefits from a partnership with white, the proposed color composition is not the only possible one. And, say, bright blue, grassy green or juicy yellow would be no less appropriate than active pink.

2. Choosing motives and ornaments

The pouf cover is a rectangle with recesses on the sides. In addition to the material embroidered with flowers, he needed a contrasting fabric in a narrow strip. A “skirt” is made of it, which completely hides the legs of the pouf.

In the choice of the materials themselves, we adhere to the same position as when determining the color scale. In our interior, the drawings and patterns that decorate the upholstery are directly related to the floral theme. For example, to cover the sofa, they used a fabric depicting a blossoming magnolia, and the pouf cover was made of fabric embroidered with various flowers.

For the manufacture of covers and upholstery, fabrics were used: Drip Drop Soft (Chivasso, Netherlands), Isabella (Nya Nordiska, Germany), Keisarinna (Marimekko, Finland), Cottage (Nya Nordiska).

USEFUL ADVICE:

In a “blooming” interior, pillow covers should be selected according to the principle “the brighter, the better”. Moreover, the bet can be made both on the color of the material and on its finish. Therefore, plain and printed, background and embroidered fabrics are suitable.

3. We take into account the colors and motives already existing in the interior

The slight slope of the back of the sofa can be easily increased with additional cushions. Their number and size can be anything, so that the sofa will be very easy to adapt to the needs of the seated person.

When redesigning upholstered furniture, you will have to take into account the colors and motives already existing in the interior – the color scheme is determined by the wallpaper, floor, accessories – lamps, curtains, cornices and so on.

In the interior in the photo, the base, which was taken as a neutral white color, was diluted with a lot of blue, light blue and turquoise. Much less space – literally two or three strokes – was left for the pale green hue.

The set of ornaments has also noticeably narrowed down. Only “strip” and “peas” were included in the decorative game. However, the aforementioned geometric decorations are quite active, so even such a small “company” was enough to bring liveliness and dynamics into the interior.

Considering the design of the sofa, the cover turned out to be quite complex in shape. To simplify its replacement, in some places, button-fastened cuts have been provided. Alternatively, you can consider the double-sided Velcro tape on the same topic.

4. Don’t be afraid to experiment

This transparent cover completely hides the pouf, but leaves in sight both the old upholstery and the piece of furniture itself.

A number of unexpected tricks can be implemented in the manufacture of covers.

For example, in our example, for the upholstery, we chose not a traditional dense, but, on the contrary, a transparent fabric. The fabric is decorated with colored dots, which gives the pouf a completely new look.

Use decorative buttons, cuts and frills. They will help give your furniture a personal touch.

For the manufacture of covers and upholstery were used fabrics: Funny Dot (Chivasso), Peaweed leaf (Designers Guild, UK), Fancy (Chivasso), Block Flower (Designers Guild).
