Note: Data reported for the Ministry of Health after March 28, 2022 may not reflect the real pandemic situation in Poland due to the abandonment of mass testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The Ministry of Health has also resigned from daily reporting on Twitter about infections and deaths due to COVID-19. From April 15, data are provided on a weekly basis, every Wednesday. However, the data on the gov.pl website is still updated and we rely on it.

Up-to-date information on the coronavirus is provided:

  1. Until April 15, every day at At 10:30 am, information on the number of new infections in individual provinces (cases confirmed by tests) and deaths was made available, as well as a summary of all positive cases of coronavirus infection. From April 16, data on infections are provided on a weekly basis.
  2. From April 2, the Ministry of Health stopped providing daily data on people quarantined and hospitalized, the number of seized and available respirators, and the number of coronavirus tests performed during the day.

The schedule given above may change – so far, the Ministry of Health has modified the method of presenting data on the coronavirus epidemic in Poland several times. On September 9, 2020, the report was supplemented with a message detailing the number of deaths as a result of COVID-19 and deaths due to the coexistence of COVID-19 with other diseases. From October 10, the age, sex and place of residence of the deceased were not taken into account.

The number of infected, died and healed are the three most important parameters, the three most important numbers showing the dynamics of the epidemic. At the beginning of 2021, the pace of growth slowed down. From mid-March to early April, it was increasing, the third wave of the pandemic continued. Currently, the daily number of new infections is systematically growing – the autumn fourth wave of the epidemic smoothly passed into the fifth, autumn wave at the beginning of February. The sixth wave began in June / July 2022.

The number of occupied ventilators and beds is an indication of how many people with the most severe course of COVID-19 currently require hospital care. From mid-February to almost mid-March, both indicators increased strongly. After this time, they began to decline. From August to February 2022, the figures rose again. On April 1, 2022, hospitals and covid wards were closed. The Ministry of Health also stopped reporting the number of occupied beds and respirators on a daily basis. Instead, there have been weekly reports of the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

The first case of coronavirus infection in Poland was confirmed by the Ministry of Health on March 4, 2020. “Patient zero” was a resident of Cybinka. In connection with this, as well as with the epidemic spreading around the world, the first restrictions were introduced (including a ban on organizing mass events).

On March 16, 2020, an epidemiological emergency was introduced in Poland. International air connections were suspended, only grocery stores, drugstores and pharmacies could be opened. In a confined space, there was an order to cover the nose and mouth, and to maintain social distance (1,5 m).

The first loosening of the restrictions took place on April 20, 2020. Since then, the restrictions have been slowly lifted, but in confined spaces, including public transport, you should still wear a nose and mouth cover, and disinfect your hands. Until July, there was a decrease in the number of people infected with the coronavirus – the number of deaths decreased and the number of convalescents increased.

In early August, the number of cases began to increase again. A record was set on August 4 – 620 new cases were recorded. The R coefficient also increased. Another record was broken on September 19, when as many as 1002 cases of coronavirus infection were recorded in Poland. In October, the epidemic situation in Poland worsened considerably, and daily new cases of infections were counted in thousands.

At the end of the first week of October, 3003 new cases were found, and on October 21, 10 were exceeded for the first time. new cases of coronavirus infection within 24 hours. On October 20, all of Poland was covered by the red zone, and thus by the new security rules. Despite this, the month was marked by serious increases – another significant record was over 29 thousand. cases of coronavirus infection recorded on October XNUMX.

When analyzing the daily number of infected, it should be related to the number of tests performed. The more samples tested, the more positive results usually.

In the event of a risk of infection of a given person with the coronavirus, it is necessary to implement appropriate procedures. Quarantine is the isolation of a healthy person who has been exposed to infection – from September 2, 2020, it lasts 10 days (previously it was for 14 days). The person subject to quarantine cannot leave their place of residence, go to the store, doctor or walk the dog. If the person in quarantine has no symptoms, tests for coronavirus are not performed – this rule also applies from September 2, 2020.

But it looks different than quarantine epidemiological surveillance, which applies when the person has had limited contact with the infected person (e.g. they were in the same building, there was no direct contact). People under epidemiological surveillance are not isolated, and if they are asymptomatic, they are not screened for COVID-19. It is worth noting here that isolation is a separate concept – it is the isolation of a person who has been found to have tested positive for the first coronavirus diagnostic test.

  1. You can buy COVID-19 shipment tests in a convenient and safe way on Medonet Market.

People with symptoms of the coronavirus may be hospitalized – admission to the hospital is recommended especially when the patient’s condition is serious, has breathing problems or requires the use of a ventilator.

Doctors order a molecular test based on a smear to confirm coronavirus infection. The appropriate procedure – in accordance with the regulations in force since October 9 – can also be implemented by family doctors. This is possible after a physical examination when infection is suspected or when COVID-19 disease is diagnosed. Ordering tests is also allowed in the case of the simultaneous occurrence of at least four symptoms from the following group during a medical consultation: dyspnea, cough, temperature above 38 degrees C, loss of smell and taste.

As of January 26.01.2021, XNUMX, the Ministry of Health no longer provides the number of people covered by epidemiological supervision, which is why this data is not included in the chart above.

COVID-19 coronavirus – what do we know about it?

The COVID-19 coronavirus was discovered in late December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. The source of the infection was a fish and seafood market, and more precisely, wild animals sold there.

Where did the name COVID-19 come from?

“The name was chosen as easy to pronounce and without negative labeling references to a specific country or its inhabitants,” said the head of the WHO. He explained that “CO” in the name means crown, “VI” – virus, and “D” – disease. The number 19 indicates the year of its appearance – 2019.

The COVID-19 coronavirus belongs to the same virus type as SARS and MERS. It can be transmitted from person to person by airborne droplets. Wuhan city authorities, fearing the spread of the virus, decided to close the city. Most flights were canceled, public transport was restricted and people were told to stay at home. However, the coronavirus, also known as the “Wuhan virus”, has spread to other parts of China and has also spread beyond its borders. The first cases of the disease have already been reported in the USA and Canada, as well as in France and Germany.

The COVID-19 coronavirus produces flu-like symptoms. The patient develops a high fever and breathing problems. At the moment, there is no effective drug against the virus, but scientists say drugs used to treat HIV can help. Work is also underway on a vaccine against a new type of coronavirus.
