Believe it or not, there are countries that have not officially reported a single COVID-19 case. There are currently 11 of them, and most of them are island nations in the Pacific Ocean. This location undoubtedly makes it easier to control the transmission of the virus. What is the current list of COVID-19 free countries?
- Most of the COVID-19 free countries are island states
- Two major Asian countries – North Korea and Turkmenistan – have also not reported any cases of infection
- The first infections have been reported in three countries so far free of COVID-19

Contrary to infection records – countries with no COVID-19 case
The next wave of the COVID-19 epidemic is currently sweeping across Europe and the rest of the world. Governments are doing what they can to limit the transmission of the virus, but some of the proposed restrictions are met with public opposition. Everyone’s eyes are on the COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccination has started in the UK today. The first person to receive the vaccine was a 90-year-old girl. See: 90-year-old is the first person in the UK to receive the Pfizer vaccine
It is hard to believe, especially if you follow the statistics on the situation in Europe and the world on an ongoing basis, but there are countries that have not registered any case of coronavirus infection within their borders. How did they achieve it?

Among the 11 COVID-19 free countries, there are nine island states in the Pacific Ocean. The very location of these countries is a big plus. In addition, a strict travel policy worked, incl. being quarantined in a third country before coming to the island.
Two countries – Turkmenistan and North Korea – are countries where the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus does not officially exist. As soon as the first cases of the new coronavirus infections appeared in China, North Korea closed its borders to travelers. On January 30, a “state of emergency” was declared, schools were closed, and all persons who entered the country after January 13 were under “medical supervision”.
Data from North Korea is tightly controlled by the government and according to official reports, there has not been a single case of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection in this country so far. According to WHO data, 3 people were tested for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus by November 10, and 462 were sent to quarantine. There were also 33 “suspicious” cases of COVID-011, which, however, were not included in the “positive” cases. More Information: North Korea Announces More ‘Suspicious’ COVID-5 Cases
Turkmenistan, which shares borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan, is also, like North Korea, officially a COVID-19-free country. In July, representatives of the WHO came to the country for a check. During the ten-day visit, they visited medical facilities and laboratories. The authorities of Turkmenistan, at the beginning of the epidemic, almost completely closed the country’s borders, and the controls at entries to some parts inside the country were tightened. Temporarily closed mosques, bazaars, shopping malls, some restaurants. Most of these restrictions were lifted in April, others were in force until June.
Countries that are no longer COVID-19 free
There were more countries on the previous list (until August 10.08.2020, 19). Unfortunately, cases of COVID-XNUMX were detected in three of them. In late October, the first case of infection appeared in the Marshall Islands. Eventually, four people were infected and all recovered.
On November 19, Samoa recorded its first case of infection. So far, two cases of infection have been confirmed there. Both people have recovered already. One case was also confirmed on the island of Vanuatu.
In addition to the 11 countries mentioned, there are four other territories that have also not reported any cases of infection to date – American Samoa, Saint Helena, Pitcairn Islands and Tokelau.
