What causes blood coughing? Why does a blood cough appear? Why does this symptom appear? Should you be worried? Could it be a symptom of a serious disease such as cancer or other serious disease? The question is answered by the drug. Katarzyna Darecka.

Why does a blood cough appear?

Good day. I am writing because I am very concerned. I have been tired of coughing for two days. It started innocently, I thought it might be a cold. While the day before yesterday morning I wasn’t coughing very hard, in the afternoon I couldn’t cope anymore. I finally managed to fall asleep, but found that the next day it was even worse. And the cough itself probably wouldn’t worry me that much, I would have thought it might be some sort of cold or something, but it got blood. What causes could it have coughing up blood? Why has this happened to me?

I haven’t been sick recently, I haven’t had a cough for at least a few months, and I haven’t had a cold either. I do not suffer from any serious and chronic diseases, in general I have always been relatively healthy. So where does this blood cough come from? What could be its causes? It’s probably my vivid imagination, but I immediately saw a picture of a cancer or other dangerous disease. Could coughing blood really be one of the first symptoms of cancer?

The doctor explains the reasons for the appearance of a cough with blood

Coughing up blood, otherwise known as haemoptysis, can be a symptom of many different diseases, but it is usually mainly associated with lung diseases. Whenever it occurs, see a doctor as soon as possible, it is usually a symptom of a serious illness, and the doctor after a thorough history of hemoptysis – its duration, accompanying symptoms, the amount and color of coughing up blood, and changes in body weight and past infections in the last time.

The doctor will also be able to carry out a physical examination, and above all, see the mouth and throat and auscultate the lungs, order additional laboratory or radiological tests, and refer them directly to the center dealing with the suspected disease. First of all, the doctor will be able to assess how potentially serious the condition and cause of the hemoptysis is. If significant amounts of blood are coughed up or the bleeding cannot be stopped, call 112 and ask for the emergency medical team to come.

Do causes of hemoptysis may include exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, foreign body stuck in the respiratory tract, granulomatosis with vasculitis, lung abscess, lung cancer, parasitological infection, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, tuberculosis.

In the event of hemoptysis, the doctor should always exclude lung cancer, the first-line diagnosis may be bronchoscopic examination, especially when there is a symptom such as hemoptysis. The doctor should also order a CT scan of the chest. During the bronchoscopic examination, the doctor examines the bronchial mucosa, looks for the source of bleeding and the lumpy mass, and samples of tissue are also collected for histopathological examination, especially from those sites suspected of neoplastic growth. It is only on the basis of the results of the histopathological examination that lung cancer can be diagnosed – if not during bronchoscopy, then in the case of lesions located around the periphery of the lung – by means of a biopsy through the chest wall.
