Cosmopolitan Cocktail

The Cosmopolitan cocktail found its fame in the cult series Sex and the City, where the main characters did not deny themselves the pleasure of drinking a couple of glasses of this intoxicating potion during friendly gatherings. Since then, it has gained a reputation as an exclusively female drink.

The cocktail world has its own women’s classics – this is a trinity: Manhattan, Margarita and Cosmopolitan. By the way, the last two cocktails are among the top ten among the most popular cocktails in the world.

History of the Cosmopolitan cocktail

It so happened with this fastidious classic that there is practically no reliable information about the origin of the cocktail. It is believed that the Cosmopolitan was invented in the 70s, and, according to many, it was invented by several bartenders at once, independently of each other (which is unlikely). Perhaps it was an unnamed bartender from a gay bar somewhere in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Or maybe it was Neil Murray, an employee at the Cork & Cleaver steakhouse in Minneapolis.

It is also possible the communion of John Kane, who at that time owned several bars on the coast of San Francisco. He could have brought the cocktail recipe from the Midwest, or maybe the recipe originated in one of the “fern bars” (taverns for single people) where Kane liked to appear. However, the most truthful version ascribes the Cosmopolitan recipe to a certain Cheryl Cooke, a bartender at Florida’s South Beach.

Only female intuition and logic could create this cocktail. It’s funny, but she positioned the Cosmopolitan as a “poser” cocktail, the main task of which was to put its owner in a favorable light. Well, the cocktail really looks stylish and outrageous. In the IBA bar list, Cosmopolitan belongs to the “Modern Classics” category.
