Cosentyx is an immunosuppressant medicine that is used to treat plaque psoriasis in adults. This is a solution containing 150 mg of secukinumab monoclonal antibody. We check how Cosentyx works and what side effects may appear during its use.
Cosentyx – action
As mentioned at the beginning, Cosentyx is an injectable solution whose main task is to reduce the symptoms of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults who have been selected for treatment. During the treatment, redness, hardness and peeling of the skin in the affected areas are noticeably reduced. Although the main an indication for the use of Cosentyx is plaque psoriasis, the solution can also be administered to patients who have psoriatic arthritis as well as ankylosing spondylitis.
Cosentyx – dosage
Cosentyx comes in the form of a pre-filled syringe. It is best to select areas that are not affected by the disease so that the patient does not feel pain when administering the drug subcutaneously. People with plaque psoriasis are injected with 300 mg of Cosentyx at weeks 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. This is followed by a monthly booster dose. If no improvement in symptoms is seen after 16 weeks, treatment should be discontinued.
Cosentyx – contraindications
The main contraindication to the use of Cosentyx is hypersensitivity to any of the active substances. In addition, patients with active tuberculosis with secukinumab can only take it when needed.
Cosentyx – precautions
Cosentyx can be a direct cause of infections (upper respiratory tract or oral cavity), therefore any abnormalities should be excluded before starting treatment. During the dosing of Cosentyx, there have been cases of people whose symptoms of Crohn’s disease, as well as ulcerative colitis, have worsened. In both cases, the treatment with the preparation should be stopped immediately.
Cosentyx – side effects of use
The most common side effects of Cosentyx are:
- upper respiratory tract infection;
- oral herpes;
- runny nose;
- diarrhea.
Oral candidiasis, athlete’s foot, otitis media or anaphylactic reactions may be less common.
Cosentyx – pregnancy and breastfeeding
Effective contraception should be used by women taking Cosentyx during treatment, and for up to 20 weeks afterwards. As the effects of secukinumab into breast milk are unknown, the woman should not breast-feed the newborn during dosing.

Cosentyx is a prescription, refundable medicine that you can get from a pharmacy. Its over-the-counter price is around PLN 500. Cosentyx is purchased as a solution for injection in a pre-filled syringe.
