Cortineff is a preparation in the form of an ointment with anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling, anti-itching and anti-allergic properties. It is widely used in ophthalmology to treat ailments such as parenchymal keratitis, uveitis. The drug is available only upon presentation of a valid prescription. Depending on the facility, the price of Cortineff varies from about PLN 11 to PLN 16.

Indications, action and dosage of the drug Cortineff

Cortineff is an ointment that contains the active substance fludrocortisone, which is a corticosteroid medicine. It is intended for topical application in the conjunctival sac. It has a strong anti-inflammatory, anti-swelling and antiallergic effect antipruritic. In addition, it reduces the secretion of exudate after sclera and corneal injuries, as well as in the course of inflammation of the anterior segment of the eyeball. The preparation is used in the treatment of inflammation of the uveal and corneal membranes, allergic inflammation of the edges of the eyelids and conjunctiva. Sometimes also after eyeball surgeries or previous injuries. Fludrocortisone is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream but in low amounts.

The doctor decides on the dose of the drug individually. Most often it is applied 2 to 3 times a day directly to the conjunctival sac, for no longer than two weeks. Longer and repeated treatments should be supervised by an ophthalmologist. Before administering the preparation, remove contact lenses and wait about 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Contraindications, side effects and drug interactions

Before using the preparation Cortineff, please read its leaflet carefully. The drug should not be taken if the patient is allergic to any of its ingredients. It is not recommended for people with glaucoma, corneal epithelial defects, unhealed eye wounds, inflammation, as well as bacterial, viral, tuberculous and fungal eye diseases. In addition, be careful and follow your doctor’s instructions during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The preparation, like any other drug, may cause side effects and the most common of these are conjunctival redness, eye irritation, burning, itching, tearing, and short-term visual disturbances. Corticosteroids should not be used for a period longer than two weeks, as they may promote the appearance of cataracts, glaucoma and irreversibly increase intraocular pressure. Treatment longer than recommended should be under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.

Treatment with ointment Cortineff may reduce the effect of your diabetes medicines. The doctor should also be informed about other preparations taken, including those over the counter.
