Does a corset diet teach the waist good manners?
“Beauty requires sacrifice” is a favorite saying of women of all time. Despite the irreversible negative consequences that wearing a tight corset had on a woman’s body and health, not a single lady’s wardrobe for several centuries did not do without this original piece of clothing. Later, at the beginning of the twentieth century, feminists defended their right, in the literal sense of the word, to breathe deeply, but a century later, the corset returned to use again at the initiative of Alexander Sinclair, a plastic surgeon from Beverly Hills, USA.
It was Dr. Sinclair who became a kind of producer of the corset diet: he began to actively offer his clients (often famous and world-famous beauties) to wear a tightly tightened corset to “teach the waist to be thinner” and the stomach to eat less. Sinclair’s method consists in the fact that the patient puts on a corset for 2-3 hours a day (but not while sleeping or playing sports!), Increasing this time by 20-30 minutes every week. It is also advisable to combine the corset diet with a special diet for slimming the abdomen – which will naturally enhance the effect. The maximum continuous wearing time of the corset is 8-12 hours.
Diet for slimming the abdomen: slimness in a special plane!
The enterprising American claims that in such a simple way, his clients lose up to 15 cm in the waist in about 4-6 months, not only because the waist “studied well”, but also because, by squeezing the ribs, the corset literally dooms its wearer to doll portions of food – a lot just physically will not fit.
Bribing with simplicity Alexander Sinclair’s advice, spectacular results of a corset diet, and a special fashionable flair that has enveloped such a feminine and sexy garment as a corset for centuries, did their job: the corset boom began in the world. First, literally all of Hollywood was dragged into corsets, then sales of corsets jumped sharply in the US and Europe, and finally the corset diet “came” to Russia.
True, the doctor also warns that the corset cannot be worn for more than 12 hours a day, and that, having received satisfactory results, it is important not to go too far and, at least temporarily, but still remove the corset from the daily wardrobe. As a physician, the inventor of the corset diet is well aware that the constant wearing of a corset can cause health problems. However, no one pays attention to this part of his performances – everyone hears only about the incredible tightening effect. And the corset diet marches victoriously around the world, having the most famous and charming beauties in its vanguard – many actresses, models and socialites no longer hide their love for corsets.
“My husband will love your corset diet”
Celebrities, as usual, add fuel to the fire of their passion for the corset diet: for example, actress Jessica Alba openly stated at one time that she used a corset to “recover” after both pregnancies, and wore an “instrument of execution” both day and night. The British press reports that Gwyneth Paltrow, the standard of slimness, also wears a corset from time to time. Recently, the Kardashian sisters have taken a great interest in the corset diet.
In addition, the stars of the corset diet themselves have already appeared: for example, the Oxford housewife Caroline Jones became famous at the age of 54 thanks to the fact that she lost 13 kg in a short time while wearing a corset. When asked what she thought about the possible dangers of a corset diet, Caroline always replied: “If the corset changed something inside, it would be distressing. But I don’t feel any pain at all when I wear it. ” She puts on a tailored corset before each meal and does not remove it for another couple of hours until the food is absorbed. One can only envy an energetic woman who spares no time for these manipulations.
Like any innovation that requires the purchase of additional equipment, the corset diet has spawned a new kind of business. Companies have sprung up offering “specially designed” corsets for the corset diet – both ready-made, fit-to-size and custom-made. Corsets come with a written guide to the corset diet, and for a separate amount paid monthly, clients can look forward to joining a hobby club and support in case of questions. In their promotional materials, these firms list the benefits of a corset diet:
the corset looks sexy – your husband will finally like that you are on a diet;
observing a corset diet, you do not need to give up any products: weight loss occurs by reducing portions;
The corset is a cheap and non-surgical replacement for a gastric band: it also suppresses the uncontrollable feeling of hunger.
Corset sellers claim that their products do not interfere with breathing and are absolutely safe for internal organs, which is confirmed by “nutritionists”. However, who these nutritionists and where they work, unfortunately, is not specified.
Corset diet versus usual diet – opinions of doctors and scientists
At the same time, doctors are sounding the alarm, warning about the harm that uncontrolled wearing of a corset can cause. A corset is an object adjacent to the body, made of dense fabric using plastic and even metal parts, therefore, to the already noted danger of displacement of internal organs, the risk of allergic contact reaction and skin irritation, as well as excessive loss of fluid from sweat, is added.
Specialist in bariatrics (gastric reduction surgery) Yotindra Shah is confident that the use of a corset reduces the level of oxygen entering the tissues. Its deficiency increases the risk of metabolic syndrome, one of the frequent consequences of which, ironically, is weight gain. Endocrinologist Pierre-Marc Boulouis continues this idea, noting that overweight people who decide on a corset diet, due to excess weight, already suffer from a decrease in lung volume, therefore, increased pressure on the diaphragm often causes them breathing difficulties.
Most doctors agree that the corset diet is not a diet. This is a trick that can have a certain effect for a while, but with prolonged and uncontrolled use, a corset diet is guaranteed to threaten irreversible damage to health.
New York physician Carey Peterson said that wearing a corset in order to combat excess weight makes no sense from a medical point of view: corsets only give a feeling of slimness, but do not physically change the size of the clothes we wear. Losing weight isn’t due to the corset, Peterson notes, but only because eating becomes uncomfortable. Rejoicing that they can eat any food on a corset diet, women often stop worrying about a balanced diet, getting mostly unhealthy calories. Their small amount does not compensate for the harm at all. Also, wearing a corset can cause acid reflux (the throwing of stomach acid into the esophagus and mouth): in this disease, the unprotected mucous membrane of the esophagus becomes inflamed, causing pain and interfering with normal eating.
But what about the orthopedic benefits of corsets? After all, they care about a beautiful posture! And here everything is not so simple: orthopedic surgeons remind that the corsets recommended for scoliosis or as an additional aid for spinal injuries are made individually from a plaster cast of the figure and are designed in such a way as to provide unloading of bones and joints, and not to tighten the waist to a wasp state. All professional medical devices (including complex designs of postpartum braces resembling a corset) are intended to be worn under the supervision of a specialist and only for a limited time.
Because otherwise the muscles that play the role of a “natural corset” of the human body, without receiving a load, begin to be lazy and cease to cope with their work. And then a corset from an auxiliary device may well turn into a mandatory one, and this state of affairs is unlikely to give anyone the joy of losing weight.
Tips for those who decide to wear a corset for a thin waist
If you nevertheless liked the corset diet, and you have even chosen a suitable accessory for yourself, take note of some useful tips regarding the use of a corset for weight loss, as well as proper care for it.
Which corset to choose:
In a world where people voluntarily go under the knife to shrink their stomachs, wearing a corset doesn’t seem out of the ordinary. And, of course, modern corsets, in contrast to their predecessors from the time of Dickens, bear little resemblance to instruments of torture. They are beautiful, relatively comfortable and can be put on and off without assistance. But the essence of corsets remains the same! Perhaps a corset that interferes with eating in the process of losing weight may be one of the original tools in the struggle for harmony, but clearly not the main one. Otherwise, its action can be equated with other, undoubtedly effective, but related to the sphere of black humor secrets. For example, a sewn-up mouth.
