Over time, it may be necessary to adjust the prosthesis. With age, the oral cavity naturally changes, which can affect its fit. Bones and teeth may recede or shrink, resulting in poor fit.
Dentures that don’t fit properly need to be adjusted by a dentist. Poorly fitting ones can cause a variety of problems, including wounds or infections. You should contact your dentist immediately if the denture becomes loose and make regular visits to the dentist.
The patient may cause serious harm to the device itself and health by attempting to adjust or repair this device at home. Using a homemade kit may damage the instrument beyond repair. Over-the-counter adhesives often contain harmful chemicals and should not be used on the mouth. If this device breaks, cracks appear, or if one of the teeth becomes loose, a dentist should be contacted immediately. In many cases, dentists can make the necessary adjustments or repairs, often on the same day. Complicated repairs may require the device to be sent to a specialized dental laboratory.
Even the best partial dentures do not fit perfectly in the mouth. Researchers state that up to 75% of all frameworks may not fit into the oral cavity on the day of insertion. Since the paste tips are designed to be passively soldered into a predetermined undercut, any discrepancy in partial denture placement will cause the straight retainers to become active, resulting in orthodontic tooth movement. For this reason, the frames must be adjusted individually. This is most easily achieved when the base of the prosthesis is not attached to the framework. A trial run using a metal framework should be performed as soon as it is received from the laboratory to minimize changes that occur due to tooth migration.
Indications for correction
A removable denture, whether partial or complete, requires repair or modification when it is broken, beveled, worn with either teeth or base material, or has fracture lines that can develop into an actual fracture. If it is loose, it may be necessary to change the lining to improve the closeness of the fit to different elevations and gum tissue. This may help prevent mucosal overgrowth, known as inflammatory hyperplasia. If the clasps and supports are broken, it may need to be repaired or even replaced because they help support the denture and prevent it from sinking into the gum.
An ill-fitting or broken denture can lead to inflammation, soreness, difficulty speaking and chewing, and very serious health problems. This device and the entire oral cavity should be examined at least once a year, since serious problems do not always cause pain and discomfort.
The oral cavity naturally changes with age, which can affect the fit of a removable partial denture. The bony ridges can compress to form a space underneath. Food may get stuck in it. Clamps can also be damaged by wear. Anything that affects the close fit of a removable partial denture can cause irritation and ulcers.
If it needs tuning, you can’t set it up yourself at home. Since in this way you can harm both the device and your own health.
A poorly adjusted partial denture can cause wounds and irritation.
Correction methods
Articulation correction:
- prostheses are inserted into the oral cavity;
- the density with which the dentition closes is checked;
- articulation paper is inserted between the rows of teeth;
- the dentist offers to knock the patient’s teeth and move the lower jaw to the side and forward;
- points that are stained on the tubercles of the teeth are polished with a cutter.
Basis Correction:
- dentures are removed;
- areas of hyperemic mucosa are marked with a special chemical pencil;
- prostheses are inserted into the oral cavity;
- the dentist offers the patient to make several chewing movements and then removes the dentures;
- Places that are painted are smoothed out with a rubber circle.
Home care
Your dentist may recommend a denture cleaner.
When cleaning a partial denture, it is recommended that you stand on top of a folded towel or water drain in case it is accidentally damaged.
The use of toothpaste is not recommended as it may be too harsh to clean dental devices.
Some people use hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid to clean them, but these products are not acceptable. However, most household cleaners are too abrasive and should not be used on dentures.
It is advisable to clean with a special brush every day to remove food deposits and plaque. It’s best to use a denture brush because it has bristles that are positioned to match the shape of the denture. A conventional soft bristled toothbrush is also acceptable.
Avoid using a brush with hard bristles, which can damage it. The device must be cleaned by thoroughly rinsing loose food particles. Moisten the brush and apply a denture cleaner. Next, gently clean all surfaces of the denture so as not to damage the plastic or bend the tips. It may lose its proper shape if it is not kept moist. At night, the denture should be placed in a soak solution or in water. The dentist can recommend the correct method to keep the devices in good shape.
Dental cleansers should not be chewed, swallowed, or rinsed, and should always be rinsed thoroughly before being placed in the mouth.
Do not use household adhesives because they may have harmful chemicals and may not be useful for fixing a removable partial denture.
Features of correction
Corrections of dental devices should be carried out with minimal use of grinding in places where excessive pressure of the device on the oral mucosa is felt.
If the correction is carried out according to the bite height, then it is done pointwise. There are cases when the hook of the denture, with which it is held by the teeth, can injure the mucous membranes of the lips, cheeks and gums. In this case, it is bent and set in the desired position.
It is important to polish this device after it has been corrected, as it may leave sharp edges that can further injure the oral cavity.
