Correct pruning of honeysuckle in the fall
Honeysuckle has a long flowering period. Its flowers are famous for their delicate scent, which has been compared to the scent of French perfume. In order for the shrub to bloom, you need to learn how to properly prune the honeysuckle. This simple procedure has its own subtleties and secrets.
Spring pruning of honeysuckle
The climbing vine needs formative and sanitary pruning. Without this, the shrub grows too quickly and loses its decorative effect, more often it is attacked by pests and diseases.

In the spring, immediately after planting, the shoots are cut to 1/3 of the length. This stimulates the growth of the shrub. In the second year, the strongest of the shoots are chosen, 3-4 pieces are left, the rest are completely cut out. From these shoots, the skeleton of the liana is formed. Throughout the season, the growing shoots are sent to the support, if necessary, excess branches are cut off. The shrub is given the desired shape.
In the future, only root shoots, dry, broken, thickening or frozen branches are cut out. Sanitary pruning is needed to keep the shrub clean. But you don’t need to be very zealous.
Honeysuckle blooms on the shoots of the current year
Do not rush to remove whole branches in the spring, even if they look lifeless. On warm days, dormant buds can wake up, the shoot will start to grow.
During sanitary pruning, dry parts of the shoot are cut to healthy tissue. Sections are treated with garden varnish or special paint.
Rejuvenating Honeysuckle Pruning in Autumn
The flowering of adult honeysuckle bushes becomes less attractive every year, although the growing conditions have not changed. This suggests that the plant needs anti-aging pruning. It is made in the fall:
- remove the upper part of the crown;
- cut branches that lie on the ground;
- thin out the crown inside.
Every 5-6 years, all old branches are completely cut off at a height of 10 cm from the soil surface. In the spring, a bush is formed from the root shoots as usual.
Anti-aging pruning can be done in 2 steps to avoid exposing the vine to excessive trauma. In the 5th year in the fall, cut off the top, thin out the bush, cut out some of the old shoots at the root. In the spring of next year, the remaining shoots are removed, and the skeleton of a bush is formed from the young growth.
