Coronavirus. What is known about mortality in Poland?

At the moment, official data indicate 7408 cases and 268 deaths due to coronavirus infection in Poland (according to information published by the Ministry of Health, valid as of 15.04.2020/12/30, XNUMX:XNUMX).

The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate provided information on the age structure of people who died as a result of COVID-19 disease. Currently, the average age of coronavirus victims in Poland is 72,9 years. The youngest death victim was 32 years old, and the oldest – 98 years old. Detailed data on mortality in each age group are as follows:

The mortality rate is currently 3,6 percent.

GIS also provided information on the structure of deaths in Poland by gender. Almost 58 percent fatalities are men.

Interestingly, the data presented by the Department of Health and Safety shows that more women in Poland suffer from COVID-19, but men die more often as a result of infection.

The disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is similar to the flu, both in terms of symptoms and the route of infection. However, Dr. Tedros Adhanom, head of the World Health Organization, said during a press briefing at the beginning of the epidemic:

– COVID-19 is more serious than the seasonal flu. While many people around the world have developed immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus that no one has immunity to. This means that more people are susceptible to infection and more people will become seriously ill. Worldwide, about 3,4 percent. reported cases of COVID-19 have been fatal. For comparison: seasonal flu generally kills less than 1%. infected – he stressed.

Coronavirus Mortality in Italy

In March, a report was published containing information on the death rate from coronavirus infection in Italy. It shows that the mean age of the deceased is over 83 and a half years for women and over 79 years for men. Data from Italy (current as of March 17) says that 17 people under the age of 50 have died from coronavirus infection, and five of them were under 40 (they were only men, burdened with severe comorbid diseases). The report highlights that the average age of patients who died from coronavirus is over 80 years, and patients who have been confirmed to be infected are 63 years.

The most common complications among people who died in Italy were: respiratory failure (97%), acute renal failure (almost 28%), cardiovascular diseases (10,8%) and superinfections (10,2%).

Data from China. The patient’s age and the risk of death

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) presented the first major study on diseases caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in February. Data collected by the Chinese up to the time of the report’s publication say that the highest death rate from COVID-19 (almost 15%) occurs in people over 80 years of age. In patients aged 70–79 years it is 8%, and in patients aged 60–69 years – 3,6%.
