The presence of the coronavirus in Poland has been confirmed. There is still no effective cure for the disease it causes, but testing is ongoing. The biotechnology company Moderna sent an experimental coronavirus vaccine to government scientists for testing just six weeks after it began work on it. Initial trials of the new vaccine could begin in April.
Biotechnology company Moderna has announced that the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines called mRNA-1273 has been shipped to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the United States.
Work on the vaccine was intensified – only six weeks passed from the start of work to the production of the first batch. However, it may take up to 18 months for the vaccine to be approved for use.
The first batch of vaccines will be used in a Phase 1 trial planned in the United States, which typically involves testing a vaccine in a small number of healthy people. NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said clinical trials could begin before the end of April.
According to The Wall Street Journal, two doses of the vaccine will be tested on up to 25 volunteers to see if it triggers an immune response that protects against the virus.

Coronaviruses are named this way because their particles resemble a corona. They are surrounded by a spiky shell that consists of specific proteins. The sequencing of the virus proteins allowed scientists – Michael Letko and Vincent Munster – to identify the coronavirus causing COVID-19 as a close relative of SARS.
The coronavirus vaccine is designed to target the protein on its surface that is responsible for infecting human cells.
Several US companies are racing to produce the coronavirus vaccine, but Moderna appears to be the first to announce its candidate in this race. We will follow what happens to the potential vaccine.
