In Poland, we are happy about the “end of the pandemic” and walking without masks, in China the mood is completely different. There, the coronavirus has been taking an exceptionally rich toll for several weeks. This is especially true of Shanghai, the most populous city in China. Almost the entire city is closed. This angers the locals. Parents are also afraid of separation from their children.

Shanghai is China’s financial center and the country’s most populous city, with a population of 25 million. For some time, it has also been the center of the coronavirus wave that has been affecting China for several weeks.
On Saturday, over 6,3 thousand people were found in Shanghai. COVID-19 cases. It is over two-thirds of all cases in the country. As for the standards known from Europe or the United States, these numbers are relatively small, but troublesome for a country that for two years – thanks to the “zero COVID-19” policy – recorded daily double-digit numbers throughout its territory.

On Friday, 14 million Shanghai residents were tested for the presence of the virus.
Public places are closed in the city, and the quarantine, unlike the one known from Europe, does not cover individual people, but entire housing estates are closed one after another. On Saturday, the order to stay at home was issued to almost all of the city’s residents. According to the rules prevailing there, people with little or no symptoms of COVID-19 must be confined to isolatories.
Parents are afraid of separation from their children
This situation creates fear in parents who fear separation from their children after testing positive for the virus.
– My daughter is not yet four months old, but if her result is positive, she will be left alone, subjected to isolation – says a resident of the Puxi district in the city center in an interview with FP. – This is completely incomprehensible. No matter what the circumstances, a young child should never be separated from his parents, adds the 33-year-old.

Anger and fear build up
There is not only fear for the youngest. There is also mounting anger among the residents of Shanghai over the blockades, which were originally only intended to last for the few days needed to mass-test the population, but are likely to last at least until the end of next week.

According to the rules, each neighborhood with a coronavirus case is closed for two weeks. This means that almost the entire population of Shanghai is now quarantined.
There are growing concerns about supplies and health. Residents are complaining about the lack of fresh food and the city’s health care resources are running out. There are currently 1500 people in the Shanghai Expo building, which has been converted into an isolation room.
