December 3. Covid National Mourning Day

On December 3, psychotherapist Maciej Roszkowski organizes the Covid National Mourning Day in Poland. He is supported by people from the medical, psychotherapeutic, academic and teaching environment.

We currently have almost 19 official deaths from COVID-85. “But there is also such a thing as excess deaths.” At the moment, according to calculations based on data from the Central Statistical Office and the Registry Office, we have a minimum of 150. excess deaths due to a pandemic. Most of these deaths are diagnosed and undiagnosed COVID-19. Undiagnosed, especially in the first wave. It was the time when the healthcare system collapsed the most of all waves. People died at home without receiving help, and before they died, they were not tested and appear in the statistics – the cause of death: respiratory failure or pneumonia – says Maciej Roszkowski.

  1. Prof. Horban: We don’t have a large number of deaths. How is it really?

– The second group are those who died of other diseases due to overburdened health care. The third issue is the so-called health debt. At this point, in order to have a place in covid wards, some cardiology, oncology or orthopedic wards are liquidated or moved, and a covid ward is created. As a result, cardiological patients and others are not provided with help, which affects their health – he adds.

As Maciej Roszkowski points out, the main goal of organizing the Covid National Mourning Day is to draw attention to the “enormity of the tragedy that happened and is happening as a result of the pandemic”.

We want to draw attention to these 150 thousand. victims. We want to show that the dead are not numbers, they are specific people. These are somebody’s parents, grandparents, somebody’s children. These are people who loved, who were sad, who had their preferences, liked someone, disliked someone. These people were alive, and now they are no longer, and with their death there are several or a dozen people close to each of the deceased people who have lost someone. They were or are in mourning, says the psychotherapist.

We would like to point out that mourning for excess deaths in the pandemic affects nearly one million people in Poland. We want to say: “see, these people are suffering, they have lost someone.” We also want to say “let’s stop the next wave of the great dying in Poland that is happening now!”. People are dying en masse, losing loved ones en masse, and we have a tool such as vaccines, which are very effective in preventing the risk of hospitalization and death, so let’s use it – adds Roszkowski.

Variant of Omikron. How to protect yourself from it? Explains the virologist

Omicron has caused a wave of great anxiety to pass through the world. The new variant of the coronavirus has mutated on an unprecedented scale and is spreading very quickly. Countries close their borders, others tighten entry rules and introduce new restrictions. Are there any reasons for concern?

– I am not surprised that countries are introducing this type of preventive solutions. We all incurred a huge cost in making societies immune to vaccination. As long as no unambiguous answers are known about the speed of transmission of this virus, what the consequences of contact with it are, or whether it causes more severe symptoms – everyone wants to protect themselves as much as possible. It is understandable – says prof. Agnieszka Szuster-Ciesielska from the Department of Virology and Immunology at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.

  1. Where did Omikron come from? Scientists had a surprise

– I heard a statement by a doctor who was one of the first to notice other symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection than it was with the Delta variant, which, incidentally, led to the detection of a new mutation. It was weakness, a slight cough, no loss of smell and taste was observed. However, the first reports show that the symptoms of infection are mild in most people – mainly young, 20 and 30-year-olds – adds the virologist.

At the moment, there are still more questions about Omikron than there are answers. And one of the most important questions is how to protect yourself from this variant.

– I will use the words of the European Commission, which announced in social media that the risk of Omicron spreading around Europe is very high. Hence her appeal for people who have not yet been vaccinated or who are only after the first dose to catch up as soon as possible. I am fully joining it – explains prof. Szuster-Ciesielska.

– In addition, our weapons are invariably: keeping distance, taking care of hygiene and using masks, especially in closed rooms and surrounded by a larger group of people. All this still applies to us, although practice shows otherwise. Hence the great request to really mobilize and try to protect in this way – emphasizes the virologist.
