The prognosis is not favorable

The covid statistics are already very worrying today, and could be even worse soon. Experts agree on this: soon we will see the effect of Christmas and New Year’s family and social gatherings.

Prof. Andrzej Fal, head of the Department of Allergology, Lung Diseases and Internal Diseases of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, president of the Polish Society of Public Health, predicts that the first increases will be seen between the New Year and the Epiphany.

– We know that in the case of the Delta variant, it takes about five days from the moment of infection to the appearance of symptoms. However, from what we know about the Omicron, incubation is shorter, from one to three days from exposure to the virus. If we came back from Christmas, say Monday, let’s give the virus this longer time, three to five days, because we have a mixture of Delta and Omicron around us. We can shoot that between the New Year and Epiphany we will see the first increases related to holidays. I’m not saying that it will be the fifth wave right away, but the increase will certainly be noticeable – he explained.

Taking into account historical data, an increase in the number of hospitalizations and deaths should also be expected, although these will be slightly delayed. – The curve of deaths in the course of the pandemic, at least so far, lags the curve of incidence by 10-14 days – adds Prof. Halyard.

The new variant extends its range

There is a bad epidemic situation all over the world. The last days are the time of next disease records. Yesterday, December 30, the total number of coronavirus infections reached 1,9 million, which is the worst result since the beginning of the pandemic. Record numbers of new cases were recorded in many countries, incl. The United States (over 522), Great Britain (188), France (206), Spain (161) and Italy (127).

The emergence of a new variant of the coronavirus, Omikron, also contributes to the growing number of cases. According to the GISAID database, the mutation is already present on all continents. The largest number of cases have been detected so far in the United Kingdom (43 thousand 156), the United States (15 thousand 037) and Denmark (3 thousand 318). In some countries, the strain has already replaced other variants. This is what happened, among others in South Africa, where Omikron is already responsible for 98,6 percent. SARS-CoV-2 virus infections.

There are not many infections with Omikron in Poland yet (30), but this number will certainly grow. As Prof. Andrzej Fal, looking at the dynamics of the increase in infections in other European countries, it is almost certain that Omikron will soon replace Delta in Poland.

– I would not like to be a fortune teller, because it is not a matter of looking at a glass ball or coffee grounds, but rationalizing it, it seems that if nothing new happens in the context of restrictions, the end of January is a very likely date for the wave of Omikron infections in Poland – he predicted expert.

Vaccinations in Poland – statistics at the end of 2021

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 immunization program in Poland still does not produce the expected results. People who have not been vaccinated so far are not even convinced by the frightening statistics on hospitalization and deaths of coronavirus patients.

According to the data of the Ministry of Health, only on December 29, 794 percent of the reported 73,5 deaths. were unvaccinated people, and nearly 2 percent. vaccinated with only one of the two doses.

The relationship of such a high number of deaths with the percentage of vaccinated persons was commented on by prof. Andrzej Horban, Prime Minister’s advisor on COVID-19.

– It is then death at one’s own request. (…) Instead of vaccinating, people come up with theories that surprise us and, what is worse, translate into the number of deaths – he emphasized. – If we had 80 percent vaccinated society, like exemplary teachers, we would have a different death rate, (…) 20 percent less. For God’s sake, let’s get vaccinated – he appealed.

In Poland, 19 percent are vaccinated against COVID-55,1. society. One dose was taken by 21 million 635 thousand. 700 people, two – 18 million 428 thousand. 050. A booster dose has been given so far 6 million 534 thousand. 001 to Poles.
