The deputy health minister was asked on Wednesday in the First Program of Polish Radio about the current epidemic situation in Poland, including whether the COVID-19 epidemic is returning and whether there will be the peak of the next wave of infections in August.
– Today’s data is 3721 new cases. If we compare week to week, here is quite good news. Maybe it is a single day and it may be difficult to draw conclusions, but this is an increase of only 30%. as we look at week to week. In previous days it was usually around 60 percent. We can see that this increase is not that big. Yesterday’s data also show that the r factor, which is the factor leading to the reproduction of the virus, is falling. At the moment it is 1,3 and it was almost 1,5 for the whole country. You can see that it is slowly starting to fall – said Kraska.
– It is really disturbing that one third of all the tests we do are positive tests, or 33 percent. the people who are testing now are positive, i.e. infected. I hope that this situation will normalize, although yesterday’s data when it comes to the number of people who are hospitalized – there has also been an increase here, it is a consequence of these large numbers of new cases. At the moment, there are 1884 people in our hospitals. Previously, it was over 1500. This is a fairly large increase, although the doctors who care for these patients on a daily basis indicate that this is a definitely different clinical condition than before, he said.
What are the most common symptoms of COVID-19?
When asked what the clinical condition was, what symptoms patients had, he said that the most common symptoms were fatigue, headaches, malaise, and low-grade fever. – It seems to us that we simply have a cold, it happens in summer, we come into contact with various temperature fluctuations, we stay in air-conditioned rooms. In people who come to our hospitals in the previous waves, the percentage of pulmonary parenchyma occupied most often was 50-60-70%. already at the entrance, at the very moment when the patient was admitted, now it is several percent. So this condition of patients is much less severe, although I always say that if someone has more diseases and is an elderly person, sometimes this minor infection may be for him … – he noted.
He was asked if this meant that the probability of going to the hospital and dying from COVID-19 is now much lower than in previous waves, he replied that it was definitely yes. – I said that this mortality in our country mainly affects people over 60 years of age, younger people go much better, so we gave this group a second booster dose. We strongly encourage these people to take this vaccination.

The deputy minister was also asked whether, since now the virus is less virulent, further restrictions such as masks and distance will be introduced in the autumn. – I think that no restrictions, there will be recommendations, which we also address at this time also to this risk group: if we are in a place where we cannot keep distance, when there are many of us – airport, tram, bus, train, then let’s put on a mask . It is really worth it, we will not miss anything from it, we do not expose ourselves to ridicule, we only protect ourselves and the people we come into contact with – said Kraska.
