After receiving expert advice, Peruvian health authorities reassessed the number of deaths linked to Covid-19 in their country. Peru finally notes that it is the country which deplores the most deaths by coronavirus per million inhabitants.
From 69 to 000 deaths
Peruvian experts and members of the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that as of May 22, the number of deaths attributable to Covid-19 stood at 180 out of 764 million inhabitants. According to a classification made by AFP, which uses official figures, Peru has therefore recorded the highest number of deaths in relation to its population, with 33 deaths per million inhabitants.
It is therefore a hard blow for Peru, because last Sunday, it was positioned 13th in the classification. It took the place of Hungary, counting 3 deaths per million inhabitants. France, meanwhile, is in 077th place, with 24 deaths per million inhabitants.
A methodological flaw
In order to have a better methodology, the Peruvian health authorities will be able to modify some of their death registration criteria, because “ the current methodology has limitations that lead to an underestimation of the number of deaths from Covid-19 “. So far, only deceased people for whom a positive Covid-19 test was confirmed were taken into account in the data. Today, health representatives will identify deceased persons who meet seven criteria, such as ” probable cases with an epidemiological link with a confirmed case ».
In Peru, vaccination began in early February and is not progressing rapidly as in other countries. As of May 30, according to Covidtrackers, 3,85 million doses have been injected in Peru. In addition, 8,1% of the population has received at least one dose of vaccine against the coronavirus.
