The Italian Institute of Health Services said no cases of measles, which had spread in the country in recent years, had not been reported in April and May. Experts suspect this is due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Measles in Italy
While more than 1600 measles cases have been registered last year, so far 98 have been confirmed this year. 52 people fell ill in January, 37 in February, and nine in March. Since then, no further cases have been reported. Doctors explain this by national quarantine, closing the country and limiting contacts between people.
Measles has been an increasing problem in Italy in recent years, especially because of the serious complications it has caused. Cases of this viral disease in 2019 were confirmed in all regions of the country, including 58 percent. in Lombardy and Lazio. The average age of patients is 30 years. 86 percent people who contracted measles were not vaccinated.
The measles vaccine is on the mandatory vaccination list that was introduced by the government under a law in 2017.
Odra in Poland
Statistics show that a similar phenomenon could also occur in Poland. This year, there were 24 cases of measles in our country. This is a huge decrease compared to the previous year – in the first six months of 2019, i.e. in the same period, there were 1435 cases (data from the National Institute of Hygiene).
In 2019, 1492 measles cases were recorded – four times more than in the previous year. Current data on cases may indicate that this year the number of detected cases will be much lower.
In Poland, vaccination against measles is compulsory and free. The child receives two doses of the vaccine – at 13-15 months of age and 6 years of age.
