Increase in COVID-19 infections among seniors
Older people are most at risk of severe COVID-19. Meanwhile, more and more of them end up in hospital due to coronavirus infection. – About 80 percent new patients are now people around the age of 70 or 80 – notes Dr. Piotr Krawczyk from the emergency room of the Provincial Specialist Hospital. dr Wł. Bieganski in Lodz. This is confirmed by the head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology of the Lodz hospital, prof. Anna Piekarska: – We noticed a certain regularity. Recently, most of these patients are elderly.
– These are not slightly infected patients who walk in the hospital corridors themselves, but really sick people, often lying down, requiring oxygen, changing, drips, and sometimes, unfortunately, also connecting to a respirator – emphasizes Dr. Krawczyk. – It is very unpleasant to see these elderly patients under oxygen and with a poor prognosis, especially since the prognosis can be bad.

Why is this rise in new COVID-19 infections among seniors? – Everything indicates that these people got infected during Christmas meetings with their relatives – admits prof. Anna Piekarska. The doctors hear from the patients themselves: “I’ve been sitting alone so much, but I’m fed up” and “What a life without people!” Holidays seemed to be a springboard from the previous isolation, associated with it fatigue and often low mood.
The commencement of COVID-19 vaccinations also contributed to the loosening of the sanitary regime among seniors. People are less afraid, they are less careful. The effects, sometimes dramatic, are now observed in hospital.
Older people, infected during the holiday season, die
– We are afraid that the rapid increase in the number of elderly patients in hospitals may result in an increase in the mortality of covid patients in general statistics – said prof. Piekarska. The words of the Prime Minister’s COVID-19 advisor, prof. Andrzej Horban from a recent press conference indicate that unfortunately this is what is happening.
The latest death figures are basically 300-400 per day. When asked about the cause of the high death rate due to COVID19, the professor pointed out that nowadays, elderly people who were infected during the Christmas and New Year period are dying. – The situation turns out to be quite clear. People over the age of 80 or between 70 and 80 die with comorbidities. These people got infected around the Christmas and New Years season, which is the result of what we feared when we asked to keep the restrictions on the holidays. Unfortunately, not all of them succeeded – he said.
