In fact, Korona is not so much a beer as a beer drink. Its composition, in addition to traditional ingredients: barley malt, yeast and hops, includes corn, ascorbic acid and a stabilizer (propylene glycol alginate).
Mexican lager is produced in cans and glass bottles of various sizes (from 200 to 940 ml). It is noteworthy that transparent rather than darkened containers are used for bottling. Such packaging distinguishes products from other brands, but increases the risk of damage to beer from UV rays.
Briefly about the enterprise
Little is known about the history of the Mexican company Grupo Modelo. The date of foundation is considered to be 1925, although they began to manufacture alcohol here much earlier – approximately from the XNUMXth century.
In the early years of its existence, the company used aggressive marketing methods, thanks to which, in just 3 years, it achieved a significant increase in annual turnover – over 8 million bottles. A couple of years later, the US market was mastered, and the company’s product portfolio was replenished with new trademarks acquired from local brewers.
The most active for the enterprise were the 70-80s, when production facilities were expanded and Korona began to be exported to European countries, Japan and Australia.
In 2012, the company became part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev Corporation, and just a couple of years later announced another expansion of production. It is noteworthy that the entire brewing cycle – from the production of raw materials to the packaging of drinks – is carried out by Grupo Modelo independently. The company owns its own barley plantations, malt processing equipment, workshops for the production of bottles, labels and boxes.
Mexican “Corona Extra” is the most popular beer in the US and the winner of numerous international awards. The brand has repeatedly acted as the title sponsor of sporting events.
In addition to Korona, Grupo Modelo produces beer under the brands Victoria, Negra Modelo, Estrella, etc., but these drinks are not supplied to the CIS. In Spain, the product is known as “Coronita” (translated as “little crown”). Under the same name, the plant produces beer in small bottles up to 210 ml. In Russia, the brand’s distributor is SUN InBev.
Types of Korona beer
Extra Crown
Fortress: 4,5%. The same classic American lager with a pale golden color, produced since 1925. For production, bottom-fermentation technology is used. It has a characteristic malt-corn aroma, a delicate, mild taste with caramel-fruity notes and a slight bitterness. It refreshes well, forms a high, quickly settling head of foam, has a sweetish aftertaste.
Corona Light
Fortress: 3,9%. Lightweight, low-calorie version of the traditional “Crown”. It has a pleasant honey-hop aroma with hints of herbs and fruits. 1 bottle (355 ml) contains only 99 kcal. Easy to drink, well suited as a summer soft drink.
How to drink Korona beer
It is customary to drink Mexican beer chilled to 4-7 ° C, snacking on a drink with a slice of lime or lemon.
One popular tasting option is adding citrus juice directly to the bottle. In this case, a slice of lime is placed in the neck, and the vessel is shaken until bubbles appear.
The authorship of an unusual ritual is attributed to an unknown bartender, who in 1981 argued with a friend that he could force restaurant visitors to drink beer in a similar way. It seems that he succeeded, and the method of use took root.
Clams, cheeses, grilled vegetables, cold cuts, Latin American, Indian and Thai dishes are also suitable as snacks for the famous lager.
In some bars you can try the original Coronarita cocktail. It is nothing more than a bottle of Crown turned upside down and placed in a Margarita. The beer flows slowly, creating a layered effect and gradually diluting the strong drink.
