Cordarone is a prescription class III antiarrhythmic drug. It is used in patients who have atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. The preparation is in the form of tablets or a solution for injection. The main active ingredient of Cordarone is amiodarone, which has an anti-arrhythmic effect.
Cordarone – indications
Cordarone is a special preparation designed to reduce the heart’s need for oxygen. The main indication for Cordarone is the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Moreover lek Cordarone it is used for arrhythmias in the course of Woff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Supraventricular and nodal tachycardia called paroxysmal supraventricular tachyarrhythmias can also be minimized by using Cordarone when other medications are not tolerated by the patient.
Cordarone – composition
The main active ingredient of Cordarone is amiodarone (amiodarani hydrochloridum). Usually, this is the first time patients receive this substance in hospital so that the doctor can see the response to its use. Then, the person to whom the drug with amiodarone was prescribed is under the constant care of a cardiologist. Amiodarone is classified as a class III antiarrhythmic drug designated by Vaughan Williams. The substance reduces the activity within the atria and ventricles of the heart without having a direct effect on intraventricular conduction.
Cordarone – action
Cordarone with the active substance amiodarone hydrochloride in the composition significantly extends the duration of the action potential, as well as the refractory period in the heart cells. This process translates into a reduced need for the heart to use oxygen. Thus, the heart rate drops and the patient feels no discomfort in the chest.

Cordarone – contraindications
The main contraindication to taking Coradone is hypersensitivity to the main ingredient amiodarone or iodine. Patients who have a pacemaker may take the preparation compared to those who suffer from sinus barricardia. Before starting Cordarone, the cardiologist should be informed about the use of other drugs – the combination of preparations may lead to cardiac arrhythmias.
It is strictly forbidden to use Cordarone during pregnancy, during menstruation and during breastfeeding. Thyroid disorders also prevent the patient from taking Cordarone. People under the age of 18 should also not take a class III antiarrhythmic drug.
Cordarone – the form of the drug
Cordarone is most often in the form of tablets (200 mg) or a solution for injection. The dose, as well as the frequency of use, is determined exclusively by the patient’s cardiologist.
Cordarone – side effects
The most common side effects of Cordarone use are bradycardia, injection site reactions (erythema, inflammation or necrosis), eczema, insomnia, a metallic taste in the mouth and a drop in blood pressure.
