Cooking onion rings in batter

Today, in the Culinary Recipes section, I want to present you one of the simplest and most budgetary snacks for beer (both for light and dark varieties). I consider it budgetary due to the relatively low cost of products and the ability to cook such a dish for a whole feast with more than ten participants.

We are talking about onion rings in batter – an integral item on the menu of almost any pub; you can find this simple masterpiece in the “Hot beer appetizers” section. Despite the ease of preparation, when creating a large portion, you should be patient – when frying in a pan, you will have to make about ten batches, since at the same time only 5-7 rings fit on the surface of even a quite large pan.

! Important. For frying, it is best to take refined deodorized oil, of course, of high quality. Otherwise, the rings may turn out to be greasy, and the whole kitchen, including you, will be saturated with not the most pleasant smell (checked)

Recipe for onion rings in batter

Ingredients:

  • 3-5 medium bulbs (it is better to choose either small or medium heads, avoiding large specimens);
  • Egg – 2-3 pcs. (the amount depends on the batter recipe and other factors);
  • Flour – about two tablespoons;
  • Water – 1 tablespoon;
  • Sunflower oil – 0,5 teaspoon in batter + for frying;
  • Salt, pepper, spices – to taste.

Preparation:

1. We clean the onion, cut it into rings of about 0,5-0,7 cm in thickness, after which we separate the formed “circles” into separate rings. The resulting rings can be slightly salted.

2. Prepare the batter. To do this, we drive eggs into a fairly deep and wide plate, add flour, water and sunflower oil. Mix thoroughly until the consistency of liquid sour cream.

3. Next, dip the rings in batter and immediately put them on preheated oil. There should be enough oil in a frying pan or deep-fryer, about 1 cm.

4. Fry until golden brown and spread on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

You can serve rings with greens, lemon, sauce, vegetables, etc. on the table.

Sauce for onion rings

Option 1. Mayonnaise-garlic or sour cream-garlic sauce is perfect for such an appetizer for beer. To prepare it, squeeze garlic into low-fat mayonnaise or sour cream of medium density, add herbs and spices if desired.

Option 2. Sweet and sour sauce will also perfectly set off both the taste of onion rings and the taste of beer. To prepare it, you need to very finely chop the onion, garlic and a little ginger, fry it all for a couple of minutes in hot oil. In a saucepan, mix together two tablespoons of soy sauce and dry white wine, one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, half a glass of fruit juice, a little ketchup and brown sugar. After that, add vegetables to the resulting mixture and bring to a boil. Separately, dissolve a tablespoon of starch in water and slowly pour into the pan, stirring. Boil the sauce a little and strain (if desired). If desired, some ingredients can be removed or replaced.

! If you cook onion rings in deep fat, then the appetizer can turn out to be quite fatty, so it is not recommended to eat it in large quantities. You can remove excess oil with a paper towel, it is also advisable to serve a lot of lemon with an appetizer or immediately pour freshly squeezed lemon juice over the rings.
