Convulex has an anticonvulsant effect and is suitable for use in patients with various forms of epilepsy. The active substance of the drug is valproic acid, which acts on the central nervous system.
Convulex – operation and composition
The drug is available on prescription. The preparation is available on the market in the form of capsules and as a syrup. The active substance in the drug is valproic acid, which comes in various doses of 150, 300 or 500 mg. The syrup contains 50 mg of sodium valproate, p-hydroxybenzoates and sweeteners.
Convulex – indications
Convulex acts on the central nervous system. The preparation is used in the treatment of various forms of epilepsy. It is used in idiopathic generalized epilepsy, absent-minded epilepsy, grand mal seizures and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. In addition, Convulex is used to treat primary generalized seizures:
- tonic-clonic seizures (most often after waking up and caused by light),
- Lennox-Gastaut syndrome,
- absence seizures,
- flexion seizures (West syndrome).
Convulex capsules (150, 300 or 500 mg) are also used to treat bipolar disorder with acute manic episodes. The drug is administered to patients with bipolar disorder if treatment with lithium and carbamazepine preparations has failed.
Convulex – contraindications
The preparation should not be used by people who are hypersensitive to valproic acid, sodium valproate or other ingredients of the drug. In addition, Convulex cannot be used in acute and chronic hepatitis, after acute hepatitis, or if such liver disease has occurred among close relatives. Contraindications also include porphyria and a genetic defect that causes mitochondrial disorders.
Convulex – side effects
Convulex carries the possibility of side effects. The manufacturer of the drug warns that people using the preparation may experience weight gain, digestive system ailments, hair loss, headaches, dizziness, edema, tremors, depression, increased aggression, sedation, involuntary movements, ataxia, ataxia, nystagmus , visual disturbances, speech disorders, liver and pancreas dysfunction. The preparation interferes with psychophysical fitness.
Convulex – comments
The drug should not be discontinued during pharmacotherapy. The effect of the active ingredient may lead to the wrong diagnosis of hypothyroidism in a patient. Convulex may affect a positive urine test for diabetes. The drug may cause drowsiness in some people and therefore may have a negative influence on the ability to drive and use machines. Convulex syrup can also be taken by diabetics. The drug should not be used by pregnant women and during breastfeeding. During pregnancy, it can only be taken if there is serious need. Pharmacotherapy should be supervised by a physician.
