Contusions are injuries to the body from blunt trauma without breaking the skin. There is bruising, swelling and pain at the site of contusion, especially with movements. Within a few days, the bruising changes its color from blue-violet to rusty and yellow-green.

What is a bruise?

Contusion is damage to the subcutaneous and muscle tissue, as well as the periosteum and peri-tissue joints (without breaking the skin). There is bruising at the site of the injury as a result of bleeding into the tissues, as well as swelling and soreness, especially with movement. Bruising turns from blue-violet to rusty and yellow-green within a few days due to the chemical changes that occur in the pigment of the extravasated blood. Bruising occurs after falling onto a hard surface or by hitting a blunt object. We distinguish several types of contusions, e.g. abdomen, leg or arm.

How do we recognize a bruise?

  1. there is swelling and bruising,
  2. the joint is deformed,
  3. there is severe pain
  4. a bruised joint has limited or completely impaired movement.

Contusions and a bruise

Bruises usually appear after hitting a hard surface with the hand or foot. They should not be alarming as they are the natural course of events for damage to small vessels and blood exuding into the tissues. Bruises, hematomas and ecchymoses are changes that accompany us throughout our lives. Sometimes they appear as a result of small and accidental hits, e.g. against an object, but also after intravenous punctures. Although their appearance is not very aesthetic – they are not life threatening (unless they are extensive and bright red and accompanied by acute pain). Some people are especially prone to bruising, especially those with a bleeding disorder. Then the bruises appear for them without any specific cause and require specialist treatment.

Topically, it is worth using Propolia BeeYes BIO gel for contusions and bruises, which has an anesthetic and anti-swelling effect.

Contusions – treatment

In light bruises, cold compresses can be used temporarily (application of an ice bag), and then warming compresses (application of a hot water bottle, compresses under the oilcloth) to accelerate the hematoma sucking in. You can buy Loffme hot water bottle with cherry seeds and rosemary today at Medonet Market.

In the case of damage to soft tissues, vinegar compresses and cooling gel dressings are also used. In pharmacies, bandages are available that both cool and stiffen. There is menthol in the band, which causes a feeling of chill that lasts up to two hours in the place of bruising. Before use, place the band in the refrigerator to increase the effect. Such compresses constrict blood vessels, which reduces swelling. In addition, the bruised limb should be immobilized for a few days, which alleviates the symptoms, accelerates the disappearance of edema and the absorption of hemorrhages. Position the bruised limb above the heart is helpful.

In many cases (thumb, wrist, foot, ankle joint), it is only necessary to immobilize with an elastic band. In the event of long persistence of symptoms after a bruise, it is advisable to heat up with a sollux lamp or by using short-wave diathermy and bathing in medicinal salt, e.g. Iwoonka or Ciechocinek lye.

Bruises take about 5-10 days to heal, during which time the bruise turns green and yellow and then disappears. To accelerate the absorption of the bruise, you can apply arnica ointment and preparations containing an extract of horse chestnut bark or aluminum acetate tartrate. Especially the latter ingredient works well in the case of bruises and ecchymosis with swelling. In the case of larger bruises, gels containing heparin or heparinoid work well, which, in addition to improving blood flow, have anti-swelling and anti-inflammatory effects.
