Controloc is a drug from the PPI group, i.e. proton pump inhibitors whose task is to inhibit the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice. It is especially recommended, among others in the case of reflux oesophagitis, Helicobacter pylori infections, gastric and duodenal ulcers. What does Controloc contain and how does it work?
Protium is a PPI medicine that is taken orally in the form of tablets. The active substance is pantoprazole, and the drug can be given to children from 12 years of age. Check how Controloc works and when it should be used.
Controloc – characteristics
Protium is a medicine used to treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract which are caused by too much acid in the stomach. The drug can be obtained from a pharmacy in several forms. You can get the drug on a prescription or as an OTC drug.
Based on the prescription, you can buy:
- Controloc in the form of a powder for solution for injection 40 mg – one package contains 1 vial of powder;
- Controloc 20 – drug in the form of gastro-resistant tablets 20 mg in a package containing 14, 28 or 100 tablets;
- Controloc 40 – drug in the form of gastro-resistant tablets 40 mg in packs containing 14, 28 or 100 tablets.
However, without a prescription, you can buy the drug in the form of:
- Controloc Control – 20 mg gastro-resistant tablets in packs containing 7 or 14 tablets.
In each case the active substance of Protium is pantoprazolewhich is a proton pump inhibitor. Its task is to keep the acid in the stomach, both basal and stimulated. The drug also reduces the acidity of the gastric contents and proportionally increases the secretion of gastrin. The effects of Protium are dose-related.
Controloc – action
Protium contains pantoprazole, a substance which blocks an enzyme in the walls of the stomach. As a result, the secretion of hydrochloric acid is reduced and thus the acidity of gastric juice is reduced. Protium works quickly, and its maximum concentration in the blood occurs 2,5 hours after taking it.
Treatment with Protium for 2 weeks resolves symptoms in most patients.

Controloc – indications
Protium is recommended in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older for the treatment of reflux oesophagitis.
In adults, it is also possible to use Controloc to treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections in combination with appropriate antibiotics, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and in the case of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other diseases that result from too much acid in the stomach. .
Controloc indications for use vary depending on the form of the drug. 20 mg gastro-resistant tablets are intended for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age to treat:
- symptomatic form of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease;
- reflux oesophagitis – the drug can be used for a long time in the prevention of recurrence of the disease, and as an element of the prevention of the development of gastric and duodenal ulcers in adults taking NSAIDs and being at high risk.
40 mg gastro-resistant tablets are used to treat reflux oesophagitis in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age. In adults, they are recommended for:
- Helicobacter pylori eradication in combination with appropriate antibiotics in people diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease as a consequence of H. pylori infection;
- gastric and / or duodenal ulcer;
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other diseases that are related to the production of too much acid.
Protium for injection should only be used when the patient is unable to take the medicine by mouth. It can be given to adults in the case of:
- reflux oesophagitis;
- gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other diseases where the stomach produces too much acid.
Protium Control without a prescription can be used in adults for the short-term treatment of symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, such as heartburn and regurgitation.
Controloc – contraindications
The use of Protium is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of the drug and to substituted benzimidazoles. The drug should also not be used in combination therapy if the patient develops hypersensitivity to any other drug used.
In the case of Controloc Control, which is available without a prescription, the contraindication is the use of HIV protease inhibitors such as atazanavir and nelfinavir, or others whose absorption depends on the acidity of the stomach acid.

Controloc – side effects
It often turns out that although there are indications for the administration of Protium, it cannot be used. Contraindications to the use of Protium are, for example, allergies or hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation.
Certain diseases also contraindicate the use of Protium. Before treatment is started, neoplasms, such as those of the stomach, must be excluded, as Protium may mask its symptoms. It is best to perform diagnostic tests in this direction before administering the drug.
When using Protium for longer periods, you should remain under the constant care of your doctor and monitor the liver function. In addition, Protium can reduce the absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium, increase the amount of bacteria naturally occurring in the upper gastrointestinal tract when used for a long time, and increase the risk of bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract, such as Salmonella, and bone fractures, especially in the elderly.
Protium can also affect driving as it can lead to e.g. visual disturbances and dizziness.
Other side effects include sleep disorders, various stomach ailments, dry mouth, liver pain, weakness, fractures of the hip bone, wrist and even the spine, hematological disorders, weight changes, decreased well-being, and even depression.

Controloc – precautions
Certain groups of patients should be especially careful when taking Controloc. Belong to them:
- people with severe liver failure – during treatment, the activity of liver enzymes in the blood should be monitored regularly, especially in the case of long-term use of the preparation. If enzyme levels increase, treatment should be discontinued. Pantoprazole is contraindicated in the treatment of combined H. pylori infection in patients with moderate or severe hepatic impairment;
- people with impaired renal function – they should not use pantoprazole in the combined treatment of H. pylori infections;
- elderly people;
- people with suspected or diagnosed gastric ulcer disease, as well as people with disturbing symptoms, such as significant and occurring for no reason loss of body weight, difficulty in swallowing, vomiting, blood in the stool and anemia require additional diagnostics to rule out, for example, cancer. The use of drugs containing pantoprazole may mask the symptoms of cancer and delay diagnosis;
- people who use Controloc for a long time should be under the constant care of a doctor.
In addition, the active substance in Controloc may increase the risk of gastrointestinal infections with Salmonella or Campylobacter spp. Pantoprazole can also lead to a lower absorption of vitamin B12. Therefore, people with confirmed vitamin B12 deficiency should monitor its level while using Protium.
Particular care should be taken when using the preparation for more than 3 months. The drug may also have a large influence on the emergence of severe hypomagnesaemia, especially in those at risk. In this case, blood tests should be performed regularly.
Moreover, people suffering from osteoporosis should additionally introduce vitamin D and calcium supplementation.

Controloc – dosage
Protium is taken in the form of oral gastro-resistant tablets. Do not exceed the recommended dose, as it does not increase the effect of the drug and may be harmful. In adults and adolescents from 12 years of age, take 40 mg once a day or 80 mg a day one hour before a meal if your doctor tells you to.
Such treatment usually takes 4-8 weeks.
In adults, depending on the disease, it is assumed:
- treatment of H. pylori infection – 40 mg twice a day in combination with antibiotics. Remember to take the second tablet one hour before your evening meal. The treatment lasts min. 2 days max. 7. After this time, your doctor may order you to take Controloc until complete healing, using the dosages for peptic ulcer treatment;
- stomach ulcer – 40 mg per day or 80 mg as expressly recommended by your doctor. Treatment lasts 4-8 weeks;
- duodenal ulcer – 40 mg per day or 80 mg as expressly recommended by your doctor. The course of treatment is 2-4 weeks;
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, etc.. – initially with 80 mg once a day. Subsequent doses are individualized based on the results of gastric acid secretion tests. The dose may be increased as needed to more than 160 mg daily. The daily doses are more than 80 mg, they should be broken down into 2 single doses. The doctor decides about the time of treatment.
Controloc – pregnancy and breastfeeding
Taking Protium while pregnant and breastfeeding you should always consult your doctor to explain the benefits and risks of the treatment.
It is worth remembering that the drug crosses the placenta and enters the mother’s milk. Therefore, doctors do not recommend using the drug unless absolutely necessary during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
