Contrahist (levocetirizine dihydrochloride) is an antiallergic drug. This antihistamine significantly reduces the body’s response to the allergen that causes ailments, which helps to alleviate bothersome symptoms. It is mainly used for allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria. This also applies to hives of unknown origin.

Contrahist syrup – indications, contraindications, side effects

This antiallergic solution is used for symptomatic treatment mainly of:

  1. allergic rhinitis,
  2. chronic rhinitis,
  3. chronic idiopathic urticaria.

When should you not use Contrahist? Particular care should be taken in the case of hypersensitivity to any component of the drug. The same recommendation applies to people with severe kidney problems. The drug is not indicated in infants and children under 2 years of age, due to the lack of data on the use and effectiveness of this drug in this age group. The patient should inform the doctor about all medications he or she is taking, including those without a prescription. You should not drink alcohol while taking Contrahist because alcohol in combination with levocetirizine may affect the central nervous system.

Contrahist – dosage

Adults and children after the age of 12: 5 mg once a day.

Children 6-12. years of age: 5 mg once a day.

Contrahist side effects

As with all medications, Contrahist may have some side effects. For this particular drug, these may include:

  1. dry mouth
  2. fatigue,
  3. headaches,
  4. somnolence.

The side effects, occurring much less frequently, include:

  1. stomach pain,
  2. exhaustion,
  3. palpitations,
  4. blurred vision,
  5. swelling
  6. skin eruptions, itching,
  7. shortness of breath
  8. weight gain
  9. muscle aches,
  10. agitation and aggression,
  11. hepatitis,
  12. hepatic impairment,
  13. vomiting, nausea.

If a patient notices any of these symptoms, he / she should see a doctor, and treatment with this preparation may need to be discontinued.

Other worrying symptoms that may occur and indicate you are hypersensitive to Contrahist are: swelling of the tongue, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure (which may lead to a collapse). In the event of their occurrence or the appearance of any disturbing symptoms not listed in the package leaflet, you should promptly inform your doctor about them.

Contrahist has very different opinions among people who use it. It is indicated as effective in ailments related to allergies. Some of the people taking it do not experience any adverse effects, others say the drug is relatively safe when used shortly. Not recommended for young children under 2 years of age.
