Below is a table with the six continents of the Earth, which contains their names, area (in millions of square kilometers), percentage of the total land area of the planet, approximate population and geographical features that distinguish the mainland from all the others.
Mainland name | Percentage of the Earth’s total land area | Population (approx.) | Geographical features
Eurasia | 53,760 | 36,2% | 4,618 billion
Africa | 30,370 | 20,4% | 1,216 billion
North America | 24,710 | 16,6% | 579 million
South America | 17,840 | 12% | 425 million | The wettest and “green” continent. |
Australia | 7,692 | 5,2% | 23 million
Antarctica | 14,200 | 9,6% | 1-5 thousand (employees of polar stations) | There is not a single state on the mainland, as well as a permanently resident population. |
Notes:
Mainland – a large landmass, washed from all sides by the seas. Sometimes the continents are called continents, which is generally acceptable, but there is a difference between these concepts.
Continent – This is a large massif of the earth’s crust, most of which is not covered by the ocean, and the extreme sections are located below ocean level.
