Stress increases the level of cytokines (specific proteins that stimulate inflammatory processes), which contributes to early aging of the body and the appearance of concomitant diseases. Researchers from Ohio University (USA) found that the level of these “bad” proteins is directly related to how we resolve family conflicts.
The spouses were asked to discuss some kind of unfinished conflict, and 24 hours later, doctors measured the level of cytokines in the blood. Hostility, aggression towards each other increased their number in both partners. This did not happen during the constructive discussion. Interestingly, the «reasonable» behavior of wives (they often said the words «therefore», «I suppose», «should be») inhibited the growth of cytokines in husbands (but not vice versa). Cooperation preserves the health of both partners, but more depends on the woman here.
