Concilium – who does it consist of? Tasks of the medical council

A council is a term used to describe a consultation between doctors aimed at establishing further diagnostics, examination methods and treatment of complex medical cases. The word “consilium” comes from the Latin “consilium”, meaning simply council. Currently, they are used mainly in relation to meetings of medical specialists, but may simply mean deliberating on an important matter.

Who does the council consist of?

Council consists of many medical specialists. Most often it is multidisciplinary teamto ensure that the patient, whose health condition is discussed during the meeting, is provided with consultation by each specialist, so that nothing in the test results is lost to the attending physician. Oncology council – a team of specialists

  2. pediatric hematologist,
  3. specialist in radiotherapy, oncological radiotherapy or nuclear medicine – depending on the chosen method of cancer treatment,
  4. pediatric surgeon or pediatric surgeon of maxillofacial or dental specialization or otolaryngologist, depending on the specific case.

In turn, in the treatment of neoplastic diseases in adult oncology council make up:

  1. clinical oncologist,
  2. an oncologist or general surgeon or a specialist related to the location of the tumor,
  3. radiologist, radiodiagnostist or specialist in imaging diagnostics,
  4. specialist in radiotherapy, oncological radiotherapy or nuclear medicine, depending on the chosen method of treatment.

In very special cases, when it gathers oncology council for patients with cancers of the blood system or the lymphatic system, the conference must be attended by at least two hematologists or clinical oncology doctors or a specialist in clinical oncology and hematology. It is worth knowing that in council psychologists, nurses or other medical workers who are in contact with the patient may also participate.
