Photoprotective foods (light protection) |
Photoprotective foods. Regularly consume dark chocolate, foods rich in flavonoids (such as grapes, red wine, raspberries, blueberries, black currants, cranberries, kidney beans, tea9,10) and foods rich in carotenoids help protect the skin from the sun’s UV rays. The carotenoids are the pigments that give fruits and vegetables a yellow, orange or red color. Some photoprotective carotenoids include beta-carotene (found in carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato, etc.), lycopene (especially in tomato), and lutein (in dark green leafy vegetables, like kale or spinach; their yellow or red pigments are hidden by chlorophyll). Their antioxidant power would explain their photoprotective effect. Of course, this effect is not strong enough to replace that of sunscreens.
