Zinc. It is known that a sufficient supply of zinc is necessary for the proper functioning of the immune system. Zinc deficiency is frequently found in people with sickle cell anemia, since the disease increases the need for zinc. A randomized clinical study of 130 subjects followed for 18 months indicates that supplementation of 220 mg of zinc sulphate (capsules) taken three times a day can reduce the average number of infectious episodes as well as the complications associated with them.8 A more recent three-year study of 32 subjects who took 50 mg to 75 mg of elemental zinc per day came to the same conclusions.9 Finally, the intake of 10 mg of elemental zinc per day in affected children would ensure their growth and weight gain closer to the average.11

Omega-3 fatty acids. There is some evidence that consuming omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce the frequency of pain attacks typical of sickle cell anemia.5,12,13

Acupuncture. Two small studies indicate that acupuncture may help relieve pain in painful attacks.3,4 A researcher mentions having obtained results in this way while the usual means had failed. The results were so dramatic that he used acupuncture for four more cases.4. See the Acupuncture sheet.

Vitamin C cocktail, vitamins E et ail. According to a recent controlled clinical study involving 20 subjects, this treatment could be effective in cases of sickle cell anemia, given its antioxidant effect.6 It would reduce the formation of cells with high density and abnormal membranes. However, these tend to obstruct blood circulation and therefore cause the typical pain associated with this phenomenon. In this study, 6 g of aged garlic, 4 g to 6 g of vitamin C and 800 IU to 1 IU of vitamin E were used.

Homeopathy. Homeopathy may help relieve certain symptoms, such as fatigue.10

Help and relief measures. Being part of a support group can be very profitable.
