There are people who are not very smart and just stupid — unfortunately, it can be difficult to expect common sense from them. However, there are smart people who in some situations look at a seemingly obvious problem with some kind of “blurred” eyes, are afraid to turn on their own heads and say what is accepted, instead of looking impartially at what is in front of them … Sometimes this characteristic of high theorists, sometimes for people with a sublime and romantic mindset, and sometime just for those who are used to thinking in a certain way and cannot free themselves from stereotypes. In such cases, it is said: common sense fails them.
Common sense is the intuitive ability to make reasonable decisions, free from emotional bias, prejudice, social or technical stereotypes popular in society.
Often, instead of “common sense”, they say the same thing — “A person has a good intellect” …
To distinguish decisions made on the basis of common sense from the rest, it is useful to use the basic postulate of common sense: reality cannot be complex. The hallmark of common sense is apparent simplicity. To test your readiness to follow common sense in any matter, answer a few questions:
- Can you put your question (problem, solution, conclusion, product, suggestion) in writing?
- Can you describe it clearly and logically in less than 25 words?
- Can you tell the same story during the elevator ride?
- Will the child understand your explanation?
- Can you answer the questions: Who? What? When? Why? Where? How?
- Are you ready to act on the principle — make it easier?
Unfortunately, impartiality and simplicity alone are not enough for truly common «common sense». Sometimes common sense is too narrow-minded, at the level of what is obvious to a child and poorly educated people. «The sun revolves around the earth.» “What should be done if poor people have little money and do not have enough for food?” “Take extra money from the rich and give it to the poor.” Is this common sense or stupidity?
It seems that common sense is a talented union of the first, third and fourth positions of perception. This is how I see it (1st position), I see it without emotions — detachedly (3rd), I see the relationship and in my vision I take into account the consequences (4th position). And talented — because I see it all holistically and simply.
