Color and its perception play an important role in life. The combination of certain shades can induce action or, conversely, reassure. One color scheme will return to the past, the other will make you think about the future. Interior design expert Victoria Kiorsak tells how to use color to control the mood and set the dynamics of life.
In interior design, there is a conditional rule of “three colors”. It says that when choosing a palette for work, it would be good to limit yourself to three colors and then build the interior on their combinations and nuances. There is nothing complicated about this, the main thing is to know that colors are divided into chromatic and achromatic.
- Chromatic – all bright shades. These include red, yellow, green blue and others.
- Achromatic – conditionally “colorless”. This includes white, black and grey.
The rule dictates to us that in the interior of one room it is better to use no more than three chromatic colors, but achromatic colors can be used in any quantity. To create harmonious color schemes in the interior, all professionals use a certain harmonizer – a color wheel. This is a conditional scheme of chromatic colors arranged in a certain sequence. Half of this circle is made up of warm colors, the other half is cold. With it, it is easy to choose any combined colors and shades.
It is known that warm colors visually bring objects closer, while cold ones, on the contrary, move them away. This must be remembered when creating a color scheme for the interior.
The brighter the color used, the less it should be.
Color harmonies are based on contrast or nuances. Contrasting color schemes are based on opposite colors on the color wheel harmonizer or on the basis of shades of the same color. But these shades should differ in tone and degree of saturation. Nuance scales are formed according to the principle of neighboring colors and those close to them in tonality and degree of saturation. There is a rule: the brighter the color used, the less it should be. The color wheel is a tool with saturated colors, which are quite difficult to apply in their pure form, as there is a high risk of color overload in the interior.
How to choose a color for an apartment
It seems logical to match the color to the purpose of the room. In the dining room, opt for red hues to whet your appetite. In the bedroom, give preference to blue for better sleep. For the living room, choose a green color that will relax and soothe. The office is painted a deep ocher, close to orange, to create a working atmosphere that stimulates action.
Choosing a different color for each room is a great idea when you have a home that is several square kilometers or hundreds of meters in area. This is perfectly readable in the volumes of palaces and villas. In modern real estate, such spaces are rare. The presence of a large number of different colors in each room is perceived by customers as too bold an idea, it is better to build a certain color palette of the project and develop it when moving from room to room.
Of course, there are colors inherent in certain styles. For example, monochrome colors are characteristic of minimalism or brutalism, while a good classic interior, on the contrary, cannot be created without an elegant bright color palette.
Each style is a certain way of life. To reflect a certain style in the interior, the customer needs to tell the designer not only about his taste preferences, but also about his lifestyle. There are no coincidences in design.
Stylistic affiliation is supported by a specific color palette. The color scheme should be tied to lifestyle, character and other parameters. It should also bring balance to the dynamics of modern life, compensate for what is missing. For example, if a person is very tired at work, then the primary task of the interior will be to create a calm, relaxing atmosphere in the house. If someone lacks incentive and motivation, the dynamics can be set with a certain color palette and interior style. These characteristics and the analysis of color codes are important. Sometimes designers have to research and predict not only current trends, but also analyze global trends for the coming years. Monitoring covers all areas of color application, from interior and object design to architecture, from fashion to technology and innovation.
2019 trend – relaxing color palette
The task is considered, including through the social and economic aspects of life. One can trace how year after year the color “moods” of people were transformed, intersected with what was happening in the world. When there was a need for balance and calmness, the palettes became colder with blues and grays predominating. The feeling of insecurity required support in the form of a warmer range, giving a feeling of comfort and security.
The main moods today (according to the Global Aesthetic Centre) are awakening, kindness, perseverance and optimism. The present moment is defined as a time to think, dream, love and act. Specialists see these characteristics in a color with a generous and warm name – “Spice Honey” or “Spiced Honey”. The color of 2019 is truly versatile, modern, able to support the whole range of lifestyles and interiors.
The 2019 trend is a relaxing color palette dominated by warm tones paired with a combination of neutral shades of soft pink, intense burgundy and sophisticated navy blue. Rich and stimulating dark, intense light tones, earthy ocher contrast with fresh white, neutral gray and graphite black. In the interior, the color palette is combined with lacquered wood, mid-century style furniture, decorative carpets and patterned textiles, emphasizing the integrity of the image.
