– We often “help” cancers of the digestive system ourselves – with our lifestyle, fatal diet, lack of exercise, obesity, stimulants – says Dr. Małgorzata Błaszczyńska, gastroenterologist, medical director of the City Hospital No. 4 in Gliwice.
– When I was at the beginning of my professional career, one of my colleagues asked me to examine his father. I accepted this gentleman, but I had to fight a battle for him to agree to the examination. After many talks, he finally agreed. He underwent an operation, everything was successful, and he lived for many more years. Today I know that what I managed to “fight” then saved his life – says Dr. Dariusz Lupa from the City Hospital No. 4 in Gliwice.
Colonoscopy – the best method to detect a cancer of the digestive system
– Colonoscopy, which is an examination to visualize the large intestine, is the best way to find cancer when it is curable but not yet showing symptoms. He arouses a lot of negative emotions among his patients, they are scared by the heard stories of pain, suffering and humiliation. Usually, after completing the entire procedure, it turns out that these fears were exaggerated. We have the possibility to perform a colonoscopy under anesthesia, the patient is constantly monitored, safe, and we try to minimize stress. In addition, it is extremely important to maintain discretion and a positive attitude of medical staff – reminds Dr. Małgorzata Błaszczyńska, gastroenterologist, medical director of the City Hospital No. 4 in Gliwice.

– You have to realize that the stress caused by preventive examinations cannot block us and make us avoid this topic. Colonoscopy is available under general anesthesia in most cases. Colonoscopy is widely available through various programs.
– I often hear ‘no’ for fear that the test will be unpleasant or painful, so the cost will be higher than the possible benefits. It is a very wrong approach that if things are delayed, diseases or cancers develop and it is too late to be able to cure it. Fear takes precedence over rationality, says Dr. Dariusz Lupa.
– After the age of 45, it is really worth going to a gastroenterologist, taking a look at your diet, considering physical activity, slow weight loss. It can really bring big benefits – sums up Dr. Małgorzata Błaszczyńska.
