The colon is the most important part of our large intestine. This one and a half meters long, flexible, because it consists mainly of smooth muscles, the “caterpillar” plays a significant role in the proper functioning of our digestive system.

Building

It consists of the cecum that connects to the right side of the liver in a so-called hepatic fold. There is another alley under the left side of the ribs and the spleen, i.e. the splenic flexure. Next colon it goes down to connect with the rectum in an S-shape. Despite so many folds colon remains one of the most flexible organs in our body. It consists mainly of mucous, submucosal, muscular and serous membranes. Thanks to this, it is very resistant to the movement of the human body and to the constant processes that take place in it. In addition, the vibrations of this organ amortize fatty bags, also known as net attachments. According to specialists, this organ can fill up and expand or contract at will, without the awareness of movement or discomfort caused by it.

Works

Primarily colon stores and supplies water, nutrients and minerals to the body. It also stores feces. Every day, about 2 kg of food gets into its flexible interior, from which it takes what the body needs. Its proper functioning provides protection against many diseases.
