The Nobel Prize winner, a tireless researcher of the defenses of the human body and the “father of yogurt” (it was Mechnikov who popularized the healing properties of lactic acid bacteria), argued that “self-poisoning with putrefactive substances from their own large intestines” leads to diseases and premature death of people.

Experience and observation convinced the scientist that undigested food debris allows pathogenic bacteria to feast, overloading the liver and clogging the blood. In parallel with Mechnikov’s students, naturopaths insisted on the need to cleanse the intestines and other excretory organs. In their opinion, without regular cleansing, the body tends to accumulate toxins – some metabolic waste that causes many diseases, including cancer.

Today, experts have different views on the need for special cleansing of the intestines or other organs. Someone says that there is no need to interfere with the natural course of things, the body cleans itself; others argue that periodic cleansing of the intestines, liver, kidneys is vital, since the natural mechanisms of “getting rid of ballast” in most of us are disturbed by the wrong way of life and bad ecology, and the body needs help.

The idea of ​​gently unloading the intestines in order to improve its functions is also used in popular author’s diets. For example, Alexey Kovalkov, the developer of Dr. Kovalkov’s diet, which has not lost popularity for several years, during the first stage of his weight loss plan, recommends completely abandoning animal protein, and leaning on foods high in fiber, vegetables with a low and medium glycemic index, as well as legumes.

Regular and high-quality activity gradually frees the intestines and helps it to digest protein well, which is added to the menu at the second stage of the Kovalkov diet.

Another popular and simple bowel cleansing recipe developed by a named nutritionist is Brush Salad. This slimming product has become legendary since nutritionists Elena Malysheva and Rimma Moysenko presented its recipe on the air of a popular TV program and promised that with the help of a ten-day express diet, which prescribes alternating days when you eat only boiled chicken, with on days when you are allowed to eat only “Brush”, you can lose 5 kg at least.

A salad consisting of shredded cabbage and carrots and beets cut into strips (all vegetables must be raw), taken in equal proportions and seasoned with lemon juice, entered the “golden fund” of new folk recipes for weight loss and is often used on its own, apart from diet alternation Malysheva-Moysenko. Before you arm yourself with the “Brush”, consult your doctor – raw beets, which contain an abundance of bioactive substances, have contraindications. 

Colon cleansing at home: schedule and volume

For adherents of therapeutic fasting and fasting for weight loss, periodic bowel cleansing is part of a lifestyle, and the longer a person’s “fasting experience”, the less often he needs “cleanings” peristalsis and absorption properties of the intestinal walls of the gastrointestinal tract.

Enema is one of the most proven, affordable and common methods of bowel cleansing. The author of the book “Proper fasting” (Eksmo, 2015) nutritionist Irina Brazhko, is sure: “Before starting fasting, it will be good to cleanse the intestines with enemas. If this is your first time to cleanse your colon, the following scheme will work:

1 day – 0,5 liters of water

2 day – 1 liter of water

4 day – 1,5 liters of water

7 day – 2 liters of water

respectively, 3, 5, 6 days – rest and recovery.

An alternative scheme: within seven days every other day, put one and a half liter enemas. “

Irina Brazhko recommends completing any course of bowel cleansing with an enema with a course of a drug that normalizes the intestinal microflora.

Do not use an enema to cleanse your intestines if you have inflammatory or ulcerative bowel disease or a condition that causes bleeding anywhere in your gastrointestinal tract. Also enemas are contraindicated for tumors, hemorrhoids and heart failure. Pregnant women should also refrain from this method of cleaning the body, as, indeed, from any other.

How to use Esmarch’s mug?

The most convenient and effective way to cleanse the intestines at home is the Esmarch mug. It is a device resembling a rubber heating pad with a flexible tube, a faucet and a hard tip. Esmarch’s mug is filled with the required amount of clean warm water and suspended above the couch on which the procedure is planned to be carried out, no higher than 1,5 meters. Having opened the tap on the tube, you need to release air from the mug and check the fluid flow.

In the event that you do the enema yourself, you should take the knee-elbow position and raise your hips above your shoulders. If you are assisted by an assistant, you should lie on your left side, bend your knees and pull up to your stomach. While the water is pouring in, breathe smoothly and deeply through your mouth, inflating your stomach as you inhale.

As soon as the mug is empty (you feel that the water has stopped flowing), lie on your back, lift your pelvis and suck in your stomach, then lie down alternately on your right and left side.

According to nutritionist Irina Brazhko, a detox diet will become an effective alternative means of bowel cleansing for those who are contraindicated in an enema. Such a diet can be carried out annually (but not more often!) – it cleanses not only the intestines, but also the entire body.

1 day… Drinking detox. In the morning on an empty stomach, drink a decoction of buckthorn or senna herb. During the day – 6-7 glasses of freshly squeezed vegetable juices (read here how to drink juices and combine vegetables and fruits for their production).

2 and 3 days… Detox raw food diet. Any raw vegetables without salt and oil are consumed without restrictions, necessarily – carrots and cabbage. You can supplement the diet with herbs, a small amount of nuts and seeds.

4 day… Vegetable detox. Any boiled and stewed vegetables without salt and oil.

5 and 6 days… Fruit and cereal detox. Permitted products are freshly squeezed fruit juices and mixtures of them, oatmeal and buckwheat porridge in water, vegetable soup. Moderately – dried fruits and honey.

For the week following the diet, you should eat in moderation while maintaining a light diet. It is important to refrain from fatty, fried, smoked and canned food, confectionery.

7 day… A sparing diet: low-fat dairy products, yeast-free bread, steamed omelet or boiled eggs.

5 methods of general gentle cleaning of the intestines and the whole body

Colon lavage using a special apparatus. In 45 minutes, 10-30 liters of water is pumped into the patient. The procedure can only be carried out by trained medical personnel, the course is usually 3-6 procedures. Contraindications to colon hydrotherapy are diverticulosis (protrusion of the intestinal wall), intestinal polyps, colitis and hernias of various origins, uterine myoma, diagnosed intestinal obstruction, hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse.

Cleansing with sprouted grains

Grains of wheat, soybeans, mung bean, green buckwheat can be sprouted on their own or bought in health food departments and stores. Consume 50-80 grams per day, the course is 1 month.

To prepare jelly, pour 1 glass of water into 1 tablespoon of Hercules flakes (traditional, not instant), cook on minimum heat for 15 minutes. Take 2 times a day half an hour before meals. Oatmeal jelly is a good way to cleanse the intestines in case of gastrointestinal diseases, as well as during the recovery period after fasting.

A gentle and easy way to improve intestinal performance without requiring lifestyle changes. 2 tablespoons of bran pour 150 ml of kefir, mix, take in the morning on an empty stomach or in the evening before bedtime.
